Right now, we’re going to look at how the rankings are broken down by position. Here’s a look at part one of the guards rankings, looking at some of the top point and combo guards in the class.
#20 Lorenzo Nichols Lorenzo Nichols 5'9" | PG Virginia Academy | 2022 State VA | 5’9” | Stonewall Jackson (#65 Overall)
Nichols is a guy who is on the rise in Prince William County and is the type of point guard shooters and bigs love to play with. He’s extremely shifty with the ball in his hands and has an excellent handle that allows him to beat pressure and break down the defense, and when he does he always has his head up and finds guys in the right place.
#19 Kyle Honore Kyle Honore 5'10" | PG Potomac | 2022 State VA | 5’10” | Potomac (#61 Overall)
Another floor general that is on the rise in PWC, Honore is following in the footsteps of his brother Keijon who’s now an assistant coach and will have a chance to make a run at a state title next year with all their returners. He’s a true floor general that handles well and runs the team, he’s dynamic off the bounce with a good middle game and he’s a dual threat guy that can score and make others better as well.
#18 Ayrion Journiette | 6’0” | Northside (#59 Overall)
Journiette waited his turn as a freshman as he played sparingly on Northside’s state championship team, and last year during his sophomore season he was one of the breakout young players in the Roanoke area. An athletic combo guard that’s fearless when attacking the basket, he’s a guy who’s shifty off the bounce, finishes well through traffic and showed good improvement on his shot making ability from deep. He’s likely going to play with the ball in his hands more moving forward and at his size with his athleticism that’s very intriguing.
#17 George Cutler IV George Cutler IV 6'1" | PG Cape Henry Collegiate | 2022 State VA | 5’11” | Cape Henry (#50 Overall)
Cutler started for a young and talented Cape team that should have a chance at making a state title run next year if everyone returns and improves the way they should. He’s a dynamic guard that sets the tone on both ends of the floor, he has a wicked handle that’s quick and tight and can break down defenses and he’s got great quickness and speed with the ball in his hands. He may not have the name recognition of some other guards in the area but he’s a guy that could turn heads and have a breakout year next year.
#16 Elijah White Elijah White 5'11" | PG Kempsville | 2022 State VA | 5’10” | Kempsville (#49 Overall)
White has started at the point guard spot the last two years for Kempsville and continues to take the right steps in his development and ability to lead a team. He had a growth spurt this past year that has him at 5’10” now, he’s highly skilled with a good handle and the ability to shoot it from deep and he has good vision and feel for the game as well. As he grows into his body expect him to become more dynamic which will make him even harder to guard.
#15 Devin Walker Devin Walker 6'0" | PG Blue Ridge | 2022 State VA | 6’1” | Blue Ridge (#48 Overall)
Walker didn’t get much opportunity to play in big games this year as Blue Ridge had a very experienced and talented backcourt, but he’ll get his chance next year and the kid can play. He’s a heady guard with good athleticism that gets up and down well, he shoots it well from behind the arc and he’s a tone setter on both ends of the floor.
#14 Ethan Millirons Ethan Millirons 6'0" | PG Auburn | 2022 State VA | 6’0” | Auburn (#41 Overall)
The VHSL Class 1 POY doesn’t play in a big market but don’t get it twisted, Millirons can hang with the best of them. A 6’0” fundamentally sound point guard that understands the game and can make plays off the bounce, he’s a dual threat guy that can score it and make others on his team better with his playmaking ability. He can shoot it from multiple levels off the bounce going either way, he runs the pick-and-roll well and he does a little bit of everything to help his team win.
#13 Amari Gray Amari Gray 6'2" | CG Life Christian Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’0” | LC Bird (#40 Overall)
A stout combo guard that isn’t afraid to mix it up with the big guys in the paint, Gray is a great glue guy who still has room to improve in a number of ways. He’s extremely strong and thrives when he can get downhill and draw contact, he’s great in drive-and-kick situations and he’s an excellent rebounding guard for his size. He’s continuing to improve on his outside shot and his ability to be the main ball handler but he brings a lot to the table at his size.
#12 Xavier Brown Xavier Brown 6'2" | PG Oak Hill Academy | 2023 VA | 6’1” | Jamestown (#35 Overall)
Brown is a guy who took a big leap this year as he helped Jamestown to an 18-5 record, a big turnaround from the season before. He’s a high energy and high motor guard with good size and athleticism, he’s able to score it from multiple levels off the bounce and he’s a floor general that makes everyone on his team better. He’s a natural born leader and if he continues to improve at the rate he is now he’ll have an opportunity to play for free in college moving forward.
#11 Walker Andrews Walker Andrews 6'1" | CG Virginia Episcopal | 2022 State VA | 5’11” | Virginia Episcopal (#34 Overall)
Andrews was a breakout guy this year at VES after transferring from James River and reclassifying to the 2022 class. A sniper from deep, he has great form and a quick release with deep range, and he moves well without the basketball. While he’s known as a shooter, he’s also an underrated athlete who uses it on the defensive end to shoot passing lanes and get a lot of deflections as well.
