Unfortunately, we only did five players for three teams, leaving plenty of guys who deserve the recognition out and even “snubbing” a few guys because of the limited space. Not to worry however, as we’ve come up with a list of honorable mentions (yes, we know there are some that got snubbed here too). Below, you’ll find 9 junior wings that were heavily considered for the All State team.
Kenard Richardson Kenard Richardson 6'3" | SG Life Christian | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | Life Christian Academy
Richardson may have been the biggest snub in the junior All State teams as he was named the VISAA D3 Player of the Year. The 6’3” guard really grew this year in his re-class year and showed an improvement in his skill set and athletically as well. He played much more on the basketball this year, and was their leading scorer and one of their top rebounders as well.
Mac MacDonald Mac MacDonald 6'3" | SG Collegiate | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | Collegiate
While Collegiate had a rebuilding year, McDonald emerged as a star as he led the Prep League in scoring with 24.2 points per game in a conference loaded with talent. He’s a guy with great range and showed this year he’s a lot more crafty on the basketball then given credit for. He’s able to score in bunches and take over games, which he showed with six games of 30 or more, and he did so efficiently shooting 50.4% from the field and 36% from deep. He’s also a good student and should see high academic schools fall in love with him.
Wes Peterson Jr. | 6’4” WG | Bishop O’Connell
Peterson also dealt with a rebuilding process at Bishop O’Connell but he also took advantage of the opportunity learning to be a go-to guy and a leader. He has great athletic and physical tools, he showed the ability to make shots from deep and get to the rim and finish and he brings it on both ends fo the floor.
Garrett Johnson Garrett Johnson 6'7" | SG Episcopal | 2021 State VA | 6’6” WF | Episcopal
Johnson was a guy many believed was snubbed from the Washington Post All Met team after his breakout performance this year. The 6’6” wing really came into his own, especially in the scoring department where he averaged 18.6 points per game and wasn’t even the first option on his team. He has a blend of size, skill and athleticism that many coaches will like for the next level.
Dominic Stanford Dominic Stanford 6'4" | SG Kempsville | 2021 State VA | 6’5” WG | Kempsville
Stanford was the breakout kid in Virginia Beach this year as he helped Kempsville to their first regional appearance since 2007 (yours truly was on that team). The 6’5” guard does a little bit of everything as far as score and rebound, he’s athletic and versatile and he put up big numbers with multiple games of 20 and 30 points. He was voted First Team All Beach District after averaging around 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
Reed Pendleton | 6’2” WG | Cave Spring
Pendleton had a great year from the jump when he started rolling for Cave Spring and solidifying them as the contender in Class 3. The 6’2” sniper was money from beyond the arc all season long and was essential in providing permitter scoring on the way to winning the Class 3 State Championship. Pendleton averaged 18 points per game on 40.2% shooting from deep, with 3.5 rebound per game, enough to earn him First Team All District and Region honors.
Promyse Ferguson Promyse Ferguson 6'4" | SG LC Bird | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | LC Bird
Ferguson emerged as one of the best pure shooters in the Richmond area and helped a young Bird team to the regional semifinals before a heart breaking loss to Varina. The 6’3” wing lit teams up to the tune of 45% from deep throughout the year, and averaged an impressive 14 points and 4 rebounds per game. In one game I watched he hit his first 7 three-pointers, and he’ll be a guy coaches at the next level need to check out because of his ability to stretch the floor.
Quentin Livingston Quentin Livingston 6'4" | SF Kings Fork | 2021 State VA | 6’5” WF | Kings Fork
Livingston was a huge part of Kings Fork’s state championship run and was arguably the most versatile guy for them as he played all over the court. The 6’5” wing showed that he can do whatever his team needs him to, and his athleticism and ball skills were really impressive. He finished the season averaging 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game and hit the biggest shot of the year for them with his game winner in the Region Semifinals.
Jaylen Leftwich Jaylen Leftwich 6'3" | CG Liberty Christian | 2021 State VA | 6’4” G | Liberty Christian
Leftwich isn’t as much of a wing as he is a combo guard, and he played both on and off the basketball for an LCA team that made the Class 4 state tournament this year. The athletic and skilled guard was named Seminole District Player of the Year after averaging close to 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game. He’s an unselfish and talented kid that will be an under the radar talent coaches should look into for the summer.
