Peoria was the 1 seed and St. Mary’s was the 4. St. Mary’s actually had the tougher regular season schedule but had 1 loss to Desert Vista.
Right from the tip, the Panthers took control of the game at 10-2 and proceeded to go to 20-6 after one quarter.
At the half it was 42-24 and it ballooned to 30 points at one point in the second half.
The Panthers hit 14 3’s in the game. I don’t care who you play, you will not lose too many games shooting that well.
Despite the loss, St. Mary’s has a stable of studs who are young. They may be the odds on favorite for next HS season and have a very good coach with Damin Lopez.
Peoria takes on a veteran team Saturday afternoon vs Salpointe Catholic for the 4A State Championship.
A great battle of guards that may end up being how well Kogbara can produce, being the only starter with size. The Lancers have the experience but you can’t count out the Panthers.
Final score was 85-59 Peoria.
Here were some of the standouts from the game:
Isaac Monroe PG 5’11 2020 Peoria
-Monroe has added a little to his game every year. This year he has vastly improved taking the reigns and running a team. He grew up a shooter, and he is still dangerous from mid to the 3pt line off the catch. But he sees the court better than ever before and can drive the lane and kick it out to an open shooter. He has good quicks but has learned to slow it down and read the defense. He has a nice floater game and the senior is poised and plays hard.
Deandre Petty SG 5’10 2020 Peoria
-An athletic defender and rebounder. He does many of the little things for the Panthers. They play a lot of small ball and Petty is the one inside often. He likes attacking to the basket and plays with a true motor.
Corey Perry PG 5’8 2021 Peoria
-An undersized guard who has a beautiful looking jumper. He is a rhythm shooter, once he gets hot, he is locked in. He hit five 3’s on the night plus one from mid-range. He is very quick with the ball and finds his spots on the floor to be successful.
Kevin Kogbara PF 6’6 2021 Peoria
-A very talented forward can do many things to win a game. He handles the ball well, shoots 3’s with range and can get into the paint using his thicker build/frame and finish through contact. He is fancy passer and rebounds and blocks shots in his area. He can take the ball off the rim and go coast to coast. He is a tough match-up for bigs as he is normally too quick and can pound the ball inside and back a smaller player down and score it. His size, strength and skill are attractive for the next level.
Andrew Camacho SG 6’0 2023 Peoria
-One of the tougher freshman out there. He is a true two-way player from using his deep ball and finding teammates for scores or ripping his opponents and taking charges. He may be the best at taking charges not only in his class but already one of the best in state. He clearly takes pride in it. He may not be a blur in the open court but he smartly changes speeds and uses his extremely high IQ to get the job done.
Camacho is one of the rare freshman in the state that is already one of the leaders on a top team.Keiren Brown PG 6’1 2021 St Mary’s
-A physical guard did about as well as you could to try and force a game. They were down big right off the start and he tried willing his team back. He gets you on his hip and scores it inside the paint taking the punishment and scoring through contact or getting fouled. He loves posting players up and going to work vs other guards. His pull-up off the dribble from mid-range was working as well. He had 31 of the 59 total points.
