Here’s a look at six of the top junior shooters in the Richmond area right now.
AJ Williams | 6’0” G | Trinity Episcopal
Williams has been one of the top shooters in the state since he was a freshman that made huge shots for Varina in their 2018 state championship run, and now that he’s on a Trinity team that desperately needed a floor spacing guard he’s in the perfect role. Not only is there plenty of spacing for Williams and opportunities for kick-outs with the stud front court duo of Henry Coleman and Burke Smith, he’s also able to show that he’s a little more than just a shooter as he can make plays off the bounce and hit them with high-lows and lobs in transition. Still, it’s Williams’ ability to straighten up off the move, be ready to shoot both in transition and in the half court and his consistency with deep range that makes him such a threat on the floor.
Elvin Edmonds | 6’2” G | Hopewell
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
Edmonds may be the forgotten one in the Richmond area because he’s all the way down in Hopewell on the border of what many consider the the Greater Richmond Area, but he continues to be one of the top scoring guards much as he has been over the past few years. He recently broke the 1,000 point club, and he’s averaging 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists on the season. He has a somewhat awkward looking shot but it’s consistent and he has effortless range, and he’s in great shape as he’s able to run around screens and get open when he’s being denied. He’s also a guy who’s a strong finisher and a good playmaker off the bounce as well.
Mac McDonald | 6’1” G | Collegiate
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
When it comes to under the radar guys in Richmond, McDonald has to be at the very top of the conversations. He’s been lighting it up for Collegiate this season and last season, yet this year’s team is very young and has had their ups and downs as a group that is still trying to figure themselves out. McDonald doesn’t need to though, as he’s a well rounded shooter that plays with a chip, can work on or off the basketball and doesn’t need a ton of space to get his shot up. He’s been impressive as a guy who doesn’t back down and shows deep range in multiple situations, and he’s able to hit contested shots and get open when guys are denying him the ball.
Promyse Ferguson | 6’3” G | LC Bird
One of the breakout guys in the Richmond area, Ferguson is looking more and more like a scholarship player every time I see him play. He has good size and length on the wing, and he’s been one of the most consistent shooters in the area all season long. The junior wing has waited his turn and is reaping the benefits as he’s been one of the most consistent shooters I have seen all year. He’s putting up good numbers and has exhibited a great mindset and good form off the catch, and his ability to get hot quickly and make shots is only eclipsed by his consistency from deep. He’s a guy that will be a division one sleeper and should see colleges coming into the fold here soon.
Zach Rosenthal | 5’11” G | Steward School
One of the more underrated guys on a Steward team that is one of the best in the Richmond area, Rosenthal has battled injuries this year but has stepped up big time when his team has needed him. He’s an undersized two guard but he’s gritty and works extremely well off the basketball, he has a high IQ and knows how to get to his spots and takes advantage when he does. His smooth stroke and ability to get hot quickly allows him to score points in bunches and can even take over games when he gets it going.
Garrett Cox | 6’5” G/F | Glen Allen
When it comes to size as a shooter, Cox has that and it allows him to shoot over top of people and create mismatches as he’s the tallest player on his team. He’s able to open the floor for his guards to drive, he’s highly skilled on the perimeter as a guy who can catch and shoot or hit the pull-up off a couple of dribbles and he’s able to attack closeouts and use his size to finish in the lane as well. He has a mix of touch, IQ and size that makes him hard to guard, and he’s a guy who can get hot quickly and knock down a number of shots in a row from deep.
