Carl Miller, Vestavia Hills: Carl was phenomenal for the Rebels. The freshman led the team in scoring with 17 points. He had a little bit of everything. He could finish strong through contact. He was able to step back and knock down the outside three pointer. In transition, he ran the floor well, filling the proper lanes. He was patient with his ball fakes and able to reward himself with easy baskets. He pulled up early for a floater rather than barely in for a charge.
John Barranco, Vestavia Hills: John is a force to be reckoned with. He is everything a team wants in a point guard. He has quick, shifty hands on defense. He showed the crowd a beautiful no-look pass. He has a pass first mentality. This has its goods and bads, which sometimes equal him being too ambitious trying to get the highlight reel assist. He is a great finisher in traffic through contact. Twice he got to the line on fouls from the three point line. He always found the cutting player in the half court set or in transition and has excellent court vision. He left a lot of points at the free throw line, something a great point guard should never do. He finished with 14 points for the game.
Grant Uldrich, Vestavia Hills: Grant quietly put in 12 points for the Rebels. He was able to finish through contact getting an “and-one” in the first quarter. He patiently shot faked on the perimeter causing the defenders to fly by. As time expired in the third, he hit a big three to keep the momentum rolling.
Sam Youngblood, McAdory: From the start, it looked like Sam was going to have a huge game. He had a smooth pull up jumper from 15 feet. He was able to draw attention from the defense and dish the ball to open teammates. He cut well without the ball and was rewarded for it. He scored 12 points in the first quarter, but went nonexistent after that. With such a hot hand, he needed to demand the ball more and keep the momentum rolling. It asks the question of what would the game have looked like if he kept up the hot hand. He finished with 17 points and lots of unanswered questions.
Randall Davis, McAdory: Randall was a huge presence inside for McAdory. He was easily the tallest player on the court and completely unmatched by Vestavia. Unfortunately, he did not dominate like one would expect. He fumbled the ball on almost every post entry pass. He needed to find the cutter faster and have better court vision. He was good at using his body to get position and good at cleaning up on the boards. He finished with 10 points but easily could have had more.
