Game Recap: Neither team really played well nor shot the ball. It was really anyone’s game the entire time, but Mae Jemison, being the #1 team in the state, proved to be a little too much down the stretch.
Austin’s Standouts:
–Lyle Winston (#12): Lyle was extremely aggressive throughout the entire game. He guarded hard and had quick hands, snatching 3 steals. He finished 2-4 from the field with 6 points.
–Tre Shackelford III (#24): Tre kept his team in the game in the first quarter when they were shooting poorly. Every team needs a player like that where they know they can get a bucket anytime when things are struggling.
–Jaylon Barrett (#11): Jaylon had an extremely quick first step off the dribble. That explosiveness allowed him to get to the cup easy and effectively. Only problem was it usually was going right. If he can add in going left and a hard jab step either way, he’ll be that much harder to guard.
Mae Jemison’s Standouts:
-Toney Tony (#3): Toney was easily the best player on the floor for the Jemison Jaguars. He played hard on both ends attacking the basket and chasing down to contest shots. He’s extremely hard to guard when he gets going to the basket. He electrified the crowd with a two handed slam. He finished with 15 points and 5-13 from the field.
-Oscar Hayes (#20): Oscar was the lone sophomore for the Jaguars. He was really good at using his big 6’6″ frame to get position in the post. His length contested shots and he recorded 2 blocks. He needs to learn to react to what the defense is giving you and dictating his game, rather than catching the ball with one post move on his mind. He finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
-Darrin Thompson Jr (#0): Darrin clearly was outsized compared to Austin, but he came off the bench and gave a solid 9 minutes. He hit a big corner three and a tough “and-one” in traffic. He used his size to get to the freethrow line where he went 3-4.
