The 2019-20 high school basketball regular season is set to get underway this month. For some teams, they tip-off this week while others will start next week. The Southern California area is full of talent and this season should be a good one.

I’ll be going through a couple of different leagues in the area that I’ll be covering at various points this season and highlighting a few key players from that league to look out for. These players aren’t necessarily stars on the team. Some of them might be, but others are key cogs that might play an important role on the team’s success this year.

Here’s a look at some of those players from the Mission League

1. Mason Dorsey – Crespi 2022

Dorsey is a very talented player who is capable of playing multiple positions. What stood out the most about Dorsey the times I’ve watched him is his playmaking ability. His size gives him a good view of the court and he has some real playmaking instincts. He runs the break well and is a good passer in transition. Constantly looking to be a facilitator. Decent shooter from the outside too.

2. Andre Henry – St. Francis 2020

Henry recently committed to UC Irvine, and he’s poised to have a big senior year. He is primarily a shooting guard, but he can handle the ball a bit and act as a facilitator at times as well. He is a strong player in transition and he can either go all the way and finish strong at the rim, or find his teammates running the break. For a guard, he can post up well and he has good footwork in the paint.

3. Colby Brooks – Loyola 2020

Brooks is a bit of a combo player in that he can play both guard and forward if need be. He has good size and skill which allows him to do so. When he’s playing as a guard, he has a size advantage over other players and he can play well in the post. He’s a solid shooter from the perimeter, and he has good patience in the post. Defensively, he can cover wings on the perimeter and he can body up bigs in the paint.

4. Keith Higgins – Chaminade 2021

Higgins is an incoming junior and posied to have a strong season. He is a scorer, but he is especially deadly when it comes to three-point shooting. His range goes beyond the three-point line and he is a threat to shoot from anywhere on the court. He can handle the ball too and is capable of dribbling up court and stepping into a pull-up three. Solid at being able to create his own shot on the wing.

5. Spencer Hubbard – Harvard-Westlake 2020

Hubbard is a big part of what makes the Wolverines such a good team. He’s a triple-double threat on any given night. He has great court vision and awareness and is always looking to be a facilitator and get teammates easy shots. He can score too if necessary, he’s a solid shooter from the outside and he can get to the rim and finish strong.

6. Brandon Perez – Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2022

Perez had a pretty good freshman season last year, and he’s looking to build on that momentum as he gets set to start his second year of high school basketball. He’s a good outside shooter capable of both spotting up and hitting a pull-up three in transition. Creates his own shot well on the perimeter. He’s quick off the dribble and can get all the way to the rim.

7. Nate Stroman – Bishop Alemany 2020

Brandon Whitney might be the engine that powers the Warriors offense, but for Alemany to have a successful season, they’ll need fellow senior Stroman to have a big season as well. Stroman is a solid guard who can do a bit of scoring as well as playmaking. He can find his teammates well in the half-court. Solid shot creator for himself as well and he has good shooting range.
