LYNWOOD, Ca.—Dinos Trigonis has had his finger tips on the pulse of Grassroots basketball for quite sometime and his best accomplishment, in my humble opinion, is the creation of these all region frosh/soph camps that take place in California, Texas, Illinois, and New Jersey. The camps are chock full of elite prospects and this was the exact case in California as super sophs Kijani Wright and Aidan Shaw took home MVP honors—and rightfully so.
Jalen Lewis (Bishop O’Dowd)
2023, PF, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lewis had quite the rep entering this event and he more than backed it up. He has a rangy frame with good length, but his vast skill set that caught my eye. Ball skills and a soft shooting touch are part of his repretoire and he even led the break a few times where he showed vision and dexterity with his ball handling and finishing. His assertiveness fluctuated, but knowing he is just 14 years old is impressive.
Kijani Wright (Windward)
2022, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Arguably the best all-around player in camp was Wright as he bagged Co-MVP honors with Shaw. Wright has a strong frame with broad shoulders, long arms, and good hands. He isn’t a quick leaper, but he knows how to carve out space on the block and he has added a nice 3-point shot to his arsenal.
Jackson Kohler (Coronado/NV)
2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Kohler has impeccable footwork for someone his age.Joel’s Take: Mr. fundamental was a sight to see as he maneuvered around his opponents like they were stuck in the mud. His footwork is impeccable and it’s not uncommon to hit his defender with multiple moves on the block to free himself. Despite not being overly explosive, he can finish with either hand and shows touch out to the perimeter.
Aidan Shaw (Blue Valley/KS)
2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Shaw, who plays for the EYBL sponsored MOKAN Elite, exhibited the skill set to back up his lofty national ranking. The willowy 4-man with developing ball skills is a quick leaper in the paint area at both ends and showed a feathery touch out to 17-feet. He runs well in transition and was definitely one of the better finishers in the event.
Xavier Edmonds (Bishop Montgomery)
2023, PF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: I watched Edmonds at the Ron Massey FHC and he held his own against elite varsity competition. However, at this event he showed every aspect of his game. The big-bodied 5/4 showed some ball skills in transition, a soft outside touch, and a blossoming post game.
