Today, we take a look at some of the top athletic and scoring wings and guards from across the state, looking at guys who use their athleticism to score or make plays on both ends. Here’s seven underclassmen as we take a look at part two.
Wes Peterson Jr. | 6’5” | Bishop O’Connell 2021
Peterson has steadily been improving over the past few years, and with the departure of a number of O’Connell’s best players last year he’s a candidate to be the breakout guy in the WCAC this year. He has all the tools to be a division one three-and-d guy who can make shots when he’s open, defend multiple positions and rebound well from the wing position. He needs to be more assertive on the offensive end but even when he isn’t scoring it at a high clip he finds ways to make an impact in other ways as well.
Jaden House | 6’2” | Middleburg 2021
When it comes to pure scorers in the state, House has to be firmly in the discussion and will be a go-to guy for a very talented Middleburg team after transferring and reclassifying from Henrico last year. The 6’2” guard has a strong and athletic build, he can score it in a number of different ways from all over the court and he has natural ability in isolation situations to create shots for himself. It doesn’t take much to get him going and with his array of moves and shots he can make he’s an absolute nightmare to guard.
Isaiah Folkes | 6’0” | Middleburg 2021
Another big transfer into Middleburg from Stonewall Jackson, Folkes is a freak athlete at the guard position who has so much room to continue to improve moving forward. He has a strong build and good lateral quickness that allows him to keep ball handlers in front of him, he’s a super explosive athlete that allows him to finish above the rim and rebound well to start to the break and he has a competitive chip that you have to love watching. If he can continue to improve as a true point guard he should see his recruitment skyrocket moving forward.
Quentin Livingston | 6’4” | Kings Fork 2021
Livingston made a name for himself over the past couple of seasons at Lakeland, but he recently transferred across town to Kings Fork and on a team that on paper could compete for a state championship, there’s a good chance he’ll possibly blow up this season. He’s a skilled wing with good length and athleticism, and if he buys in on both ends his versatility is something that’s very intriguing. He can handle in transition and make plays for others, he’s shown the ability to make shots from all three levels and he’s an athletic finisher in the lane as well.
Dominic Stanford | 6’4” | Kempsville 2021
My pick for breakout player in the Beach District if not the entire 757 this season, Stanford has all of the tools to be a division one wing and now that he’ll be the go-to guy at Kempsville he’ll put all of that on display. He has a great build as a wing with good athleticism and finishing ability above the rim, he can shoot the basketball from deep and there aren’t a ton of holes in his game offensively. He has a chip on his shoulder and a lot to prove, and I’m fully expecting a huge year from him this year which could possibly jump start his recruitment.
Tyler Nickel | 6’6” | East Rockingham 2022
At first look, Nickel seems like he’d be a knock down shooter with good size, but when you watch him play you realize that not only can he shoot the basketball but he’s a good athlete and well rounded scorer who can play on and off the basketball. He’s very strong for his age and he’s fearless attacking the basket where he’ll straight run you over or turn it over on your head, and he also uses his athleticism on the defensive end to get blocks, rebound the ball and is a great help side defender. He’s able to score the ball from all three levels and may still be growing, which is scary to think about.
Jaden Daughtry | 6’5” | Benedictine 2022
Daughtry is set to be the breakout guy in Richmond this year for a Benedictine team that is very young but has some good talent to build around. He can play multiple positions and is an inside-out guy but he thrives in transition where he runs the floor like a guard and finishes above the rim like a monster. He can shoot the spot up three and attack closeouts to get to the rim and his athleticism allows him to guard multiple positions and rebound the basketball very well too.
