DJ Steward to Duke
Huge news broke on Wednesday afternoon as the state’s top 2020 prospect Whitney Young combo guard DJ Steward announced that he will be going to Duke. Steward has been one of the state’s top prospects since this class entered high school.
He took his game to another level this spring and summer with Meanstreets. In the EYBL regular season Steward averaged 24.1 points per game on 50% shooting from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. His ability to make shots from mid-range and three both off the dribble and catch is what separates him as a prospect. Dynamic with the ball in his hands slithering through defenders.
Steward narrowed his list to eight schools after the summer, but after the Duke offer at Peach Jam they were considered the prohibited favorite. Texas and Louisville were very much in the mix until the end as Texas got two official visits and Louisville had him on campus in June really opening his eyes to the Cardinals program. The Blue Devils put the full court press on Steward going four deep at a recent open gym to help secure an official visit this past weekend which sealed the deal.
He joins a stellar Duke recruiting class with Jalen Johnson (#4 overall) and Jeremy Roach (#17 overall). Steward still has a senior year in front of him with a lot on the table as he will be a strong contender for Mr. Basketball and the Dolphins will be among the top teams in 4A for a state crown.
