The lists compiled will be organized based on year and position, and will only include players that have open recruitments and have yet to make a verbal commitment. It’s impossible for us to mention every kid that boosted their stock throughout the summer, but we’ve narrowed down some of the players that took the biggest jumps in improvement and interest from colleges. Here’s part two of the 2019 point guards.
Bryan Phillips | 6’0” | Maury/Boo Williams
New Offers: Norfolk State
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #24
Tough, strong and athletic are three words that come to mind when you look at Phillips who started in the backcourt with fellow freshman Chase Coleman at Maury. In transition, not many players can stay in front of Phillips, and if they can it’s tough to contest his shot without fouling because of his upper body strength. He has to work on his form and consistency with his jump shot from deep, but he has all the physical tools and the tough mindset to get it done with the best of them.
Cam Savage | 5’10” | South Lakes/Uncommon Bulls 16U
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #42
The first thing you see with Savage is the poise that he plays with at such a young age. He’s always one step ahead of his opponent on both ends of the floor, and he has great instincts in transition where he can finish at the basket or find a teammate running for an easy basket if the defense commits. He has a good frame that looks like he’ll grow, he changes pace well and he’s an energy guy that will dominate you then let you know about it as well.
Quentin Morton-Robertson | 5’7” | Radford/Team Winston
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #44
He’s almost always the smallest player on the floor, but that doesn’t stop Morton-Robertson from typically being the best player on the court as well. After leading Radford to a state championship as a freshman point guard, he continued his stellar play with Team Winston where he was the leading scorer. He’s lightning quick, especially defensively where he jumps passing lanes regularly for fast break opportunities. He’s a facilitator that lives in the lane, has a solid jumper from deep and is creative around the basket when he needs to finish over taller players. Whether he grows another inch or not, he’ll still be recruited by scholarship schools if he continues to win the way he has.
Devon Russell | 5’10” | Northside/Spectrum
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #50
Russell was an impact player for Northside in his freshman season off the bench, including a huge 17 point outing in the 3A West Championship against Spotswood. The tough combo guard is a competitor on both ends, going right at bigger players in the lane on offense and always seems to be the first one on the floor for a 50-50 ball. He has to work on keeping his composure and getting his teammates involved more frequently, but those are common things young, competitive point guards often have to work at.
Ashley James | 6’0” | Green Run/BWSL Berry
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #54
He played on a deep and talented Green Run team as a freshman, so it was evident he could play but was just buried under upperclassmen. However, this summer he showed off what separates him from other guards his age, and that’s speed and handle. James is a blur in transition and has a good feel as to when he should finish and when he should pass. He also uses that athleticism and speed on defense, where he can cover a lot of ground very quickly to play passing lanes for steals. It will be interesting to see how he develops, because he’s been gifted with the right tools to be very good.
Bryce Douglas | 5’11” | Bishop Ireton/VA Playmakerz
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #60
He’s one that we saw for the first time this summer, and we’ll definitely be sure to see him progress in the WCAC with Bishop Ireton. A natural scorer, Douglas can fill it up from all three levels against top competition. He was the leading scorer on a talented VA Playmakerz team, and showed that he can do it against the best with a good showing at the Hoop Group Future All American camp. It’s tough to tell now whether he’ll end up as a point or an off guard, but he has the natural ability to be a very good player at either position.
