Lets take a look at some players playing in towns under the population of 1,000 people. All of these players have the potential to play college basketball somewhere after high school. Start stuffing some of these rural mailboxes throughout the Palmetto State.
Summerton, SC – Population 959
Traveon DavisTraveon Davis and Zyan Gilmore helped the Clarendon Hall Saints win a SCISA Class A State Championship last season. The Saints finished the season at (29-0). Davis and Gilmore both averaged just over 20 ppg last season for Head Coach Anthony Ritenour. Davis 6’4 is deep range shooting guard who can really light it up from downtown.
Zyan GilmoreGilmore a scoring guard will make the transition to point guard in college. Gilmore has hit several clutch shots over the past few years for the Saints. Gilmore is the quarterback for the Saints 8-man football team. Davis and Gilmore both started their careers at nearby Lake Marion HS in Santee.
McBee, SC – Population 852
Devin BristowDevon Bristow 6’8 plays at McBee HS for Head Coach Patrick Cook. Bristow is a late bloomer in the game and has really improved over the years. Bristow finally played Grassroots ball this past summer with the Carolina Wolves out of North Carolina. Bristow averaged a double-double last season for the Panthers 10.2 ppg, 11.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks last season.
Ehrhardt, SC – Population 498
James MingoJames Mingo transferred into Andrew Jackson Academy last year after the basketball season. Mingo 6’4 played at nearby Barnwell HS before transferring over to the Confederates. Mingo played this summer during the NCAA Basketball Camp with his new teammates at Cardinal Newman. Andrew Jackson Academy last recorded a enrollment of 145 students.
Neeses, SC – Population 355
I’rek HartwellI’rek Hartwell will be the main focus this season with the departure of Marlow Gilmore. Hartwell averaged 20.5 ppg last season for the Trojans. Hartwell plays at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler HS in Orangeburg County.
Richburg, SC – Population 263
Demetric Hardin 6’3 is a dual sport athlete at Lewisville HS. Hardin played this past Grassroots season with the Carolina Pressure . Hardin is currently playing football for the Lions as a wide receiver.
