At 5’7, the rising freshman point guard is a knock down shooter who works hard to find open spots. He excels running the pick-and-roll with a good handle and a feel for finding the roll man. He can also drive and kick and has the ability to find the open man, and when his defender backs off, he can stick an open shot.
He says he hopes the experience of playing with Drive5 Elite, which played up this summer in several 15U tournaments, including the Sunflower Showcase in Kansas City in early July, helps him as he prepares for his freshman season.
“It has been a great experience playing for my summer team because I fit right in with my team,” he says. “They always find me in the corner or trying to go off screens to get open for a shot. It has prepared me a lot because we don’t play zone at all so playing man will make my defense better for high school with players that are stronger and quicker.”
Bonner says he has spent a lot of time adding new elements to his game this summer, including footwork drills and improving his shot off the dribble.
“I’ve been doing all types of foot work drills that will help me with defense and going off screens quicker,” Bonner says. “All my life I’ve been a set shooter and shooting off the dribble will improve my game a lot.
“I think my shooting ability will help me a lot next season along with communication. I learned that when u play against solid competition that communication is very important.”
Bonner says his dad has had the biggest influence on his basketball career to date.
“He has gotten hurt a few times but that didn’t stop him from playing and he worked hard to get back from his injuries,” Bonner says. “That just tells me to never let anything stop me from what I’m doing on the court and keep on chasing my dreams.”
A fan of Steph Curry, Bonner says he enjoys watching his shooting, ball handling and ability to find his shot.
“He’s always going off screens or finding his own shot,” Bonner says. “This has helped me a lot because I was always a set shooter but now I like to go off screens and find my shot when I’m on the court.”
