WICHITA, Kan. — The opening day of the Grind Region Finals opened on Friday with several standout performances in the 17U division at the Wichita Hoops Athletic Facility in Wichita.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several of Kansas’ top 17U performers in Friday’s opening round games of the 17U division.
3-Trey Reid, G, Maize South, NLHA Gaddis (pictured)
A point guard with good vision and awareness during a press. He is solid on both ends of the floor and showed a knack for ball security and weak side help around the perimeter when looking to trap. He had a great finish and one at the end of the first half against Freedom Hoops that showcased his ability to finish and he answered that with a second jumper immediately following.
0 — Makye Loggins, 6’0, G, Wichita South, NLHA Silmon. @LogginsMakye
Loggins impressed on Friday with a calm, cool demeanor and terrific leadership skills. He is a solid all-around point guard who can handle the ball, get his team into its offensive sets and plays a tough, determined brand of basketball at both ends of the floor. Loggins showed the ability to knock down open shots and has a smooth mid-range game, able to pull up off the bounce and knock down tough jumpers.
14 — Bryce Johnson, 6’3, G/F, 2020, Lawrence, Primetime Ballerz
Johnson and DK Middleton (below) both played a terrific all-around game in Friday’s opening 17U game against top seeded Dallas Showtyme in Wichita. Johnson showed off his offensive skill set, knocking down several tough jumpers, moving without the ball to free himself for easy lay-ins, and playing tough man defense against a big front line. Johnson hasn’t gotten much recruiting hype, but he is a talented performer who has impressed this offseason.
1 — DK Middleton, 6’3, G/F, 2020, Free State, Primetime Ballerz
Middleton and Primetime Ballerz came to play today in the opening round of the Grind Finals against No. 1 seed Dallas Primetyme. A jack-of-all trade type wing player, Middleton showed off his ability to run the floor and finish above the rim as he got out ahead of the pack on several fast breaks and finished with impressive slams. He showed the ability to finish around the basket over and around bigger players as well as the ability to step out and handle the ball and create for himself and others. Middleton got lost behind the defense several times for easy chances as he showed the ability to move without the ball and find open seams in a defense on Friday.
