A rising guard out of Topeka, Hayden Catholic 2020 John Roeder is establishing himself as a standout perimeter shooter who can also create shots for his team and get to the basket.
At 5’11, Roeder is comfortable in the mid-range and is strong at driving to the basket. At the defensive end, he likes to get in the passing lanes and uses his quickness to pick up steals.
He is in his fifth summer playing for SSA Elite and says the experience has helped him prepare for the upcoming season and perhaps beyond. He says he is spending much of the offseason working on improving his outside shot and getting stronger in the weight room.
“It (Playing with SSA) has helped me get ready for the season by giving me the chance to play against a high level of competition,” Roeder said. “I also learn a lot from my coaches and from playing with guys from the surrounding area.
Roeder says he enjoyed his junior season with Hayden and says he hopes to take an even bigger step forward this upcoming season.
“I had a lot of fun playing for my coaches and with my teammates at Hayden, but we were disappointed with the way our season ended last year,” he says. “I’m hoping to use it as motivation for next season as we try to make a run for state.”
Roeder says his dad has had the biggest influence on his basketball career to date.
“He gives me feedback after my games and tells me what I did well and what I can work on,” Roeder said. “I’ve also learned from all my coaches over the years.”
A fan of Russell Westbrook, Roeder says he has looked to take various elements of the star guard’s game and make them his own.
“Tthe intensity and passion he brings to the game when he’s on the floor — I try to implement his court vision and how hard he plays every game,” Roeder said.
