Millennium defeated Cesar Chavez in the rematch to win the Big School Chip. Both schools look to be possible favorites in 5A (Millennium) and 6A (Chavez).
Here were some of the juniors who shined who I haven’t previously mentioned:
DaRon Holmes PF 6’8 180 Millennium
-Skilled face-up forward can make more shots then a year ago. He can take his defender off the dribble then stop and pop/rise up and shoot it from mid-range. He has a more consistent 3pt shot and his footwork just keeps improving. He runs the floor well and can get up above the rim on the break and throw it down with his quick jump and length. He is a good second jumper and is using that skill to block shots at a high level and rebound. He is becoming a really good passer as he gets doubled or crowded on defense often. He also keeps the ball in bounds giving his team extra possessions when he blocks shots. He can put on weight and get stronger moving forward. He was my personal tournament Co-MVP along with Ty Ty Washington Jr.
Maxwell Lewis SF 6’7 175 AZ Compass Prep
-Big time athlete and length and seems to glide in the air for a minute. It takes him very few steps to get to the rim and dunk the ball. He has a nice euro step and is an active defender. He plays the passing lanes and can hit the deep 3pt shots. His upside seems to be very high with some untapped potential.
Frankie Collins PG 6’1 175 AZ Compass Prep
-Physical and athletic pure PG. Can get to the hoop at will with his super tight handle and powerful build/frame. He seems to bounce off defenders and absorb the contact and still finish. He can hit the 3pt shot plus pull-up off the dribble. One of the better junior PG’s on the West Coast.
Justus Jackson PG 6’0 160 Millennium
-Skilled scoring lead guard keeps improving as well. His pull-up from mid range is a thing of beauty. He gets great lift on his shot and his deep 3pt shot is just as effective. He really sees the court well and has become more of a true PG the older he gets. He understands the little nuances it takes to make others better and is very poised and confident. He is sneaky athletic to throw it down at almost 6’1 and is quick on the ball defensively. The son of a former pro football player is a winner.
Kiran Oliver SF 6’4 160 Paradise Honors
-Like his teammate Iliya, Oliver has a big time motor and is a quick twitch athlete. He is a stud in transition and crashes the boards to keep many plays alive. His catch 3pt shot has improved dramatically and although he doesn’t create too much of his own offense, he scores it by being active. He probably avg two blocks a game by being aggressive and he is a player that shows all his emotions. He will need to start filling in and getting stronger but his high wire act will help many schools. (Pictured)
Jalen Scott PG 6’2 165 Paradise Honors
-His feel is off the charts and seems to be able to find players at will. A rare true PG trying to set up his teammates every possession. He picks his spots when he looks to score it. He can shoot it from deep and get to the rim and score on layups. He uses his height and length to score in traffic. He scores more than you would think despite being thinner.
Duke Brennan C 6’9 225 Perry (Team Harden 17)
-Strong bodied 5-man has strong hands, wide shoulders and uses it to rebound and score it. He didn’t get a whole lot of touches but was effective when he did. He isn’t going to jump out of the gym, but will gain his position/box out and rebound the ball using his gifts. He is skilled inside with nice footwork.
Bailon Black CG 6’3 155 Ironwood
-Deep 3pt range and one of those players who looks good shooting the ball every attempt. His range allows him to be effective and can shot fake then get by his man and find teammates. This is where he can be dangerous. He makes passes with either hand look easy. He has grown a little in the last year and looks like he may not be done.
Kevin Kogbara F 6’5 230 Peoria
-Thick forward who can do many things well. He can shoot it from the 3pt line with deep range. He can drive the lane and use his thick body/frame to carve up space and score it. He rebounds the ball well and also is a very good passer. His main focal point is becoming a more consistent player every time he steps on the court. The talent is clearly there though and the Panthers should be a good team with him leading the way for the next two years.
Jeffrey Goodere C/PF 6’9 170 Estrella Foothills
-Goodere is slowly coming. He is still very thin and needs to gain that strength to battle deep in the post. That being said, he has a nice half hook shot, which seems to be his go-to move, plus can face-up and shoot it from 17-feet. He keeps the ball high on rebounds and is a smart player. He should make another leap up over the next two years.
