A 6’4 wing player, Patterson is a drive-first, shoot-second player who likes to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket where he is a strong finisher.
“I like to get to the rim and finish a couple easy ones before I start shooting from 3,” he says. “I also like to use cuts and movement to get easy layups and shots around the rim.”
Patterson has been with the MoKan program since he was in the second grade and says the experience has helped prepare him for his high school career and perhaps beyond.
“I have always loved (playing with MoKan), it’s a great winning culture and our coaches are always thinking about what’s best for our improvement and overall game,” Patterson said. “The training which we do at our practices directly translate to the AAU game, but also for High School.”
As one of his team’s taller players, Patterson was mostly an inside player when he was younger, and has been working on his perimeter skills as he transitions from playing a big man role to a guard role
“Growing up I usually played the 4 or 5 and now that the players have gotten taller it’s necessary for me to become more of a guard than a big,” he says. “Some of this includes ball handling and my three point shot.”
Patterson has not yet earned a full time varsity role at Blue Valley North, playing for the programs JV team last year and its freshman team that year before that, but is hopeful he will earn a key role this season.
“I’m still waiting on my opportunity at the varsity level. Blue Valley North has a great winning culture and I can’t wait to be a part of it for the next couple years,” he says.
A fan of the Utah Jazz, Patterson says he watches wing Joe Ingles play and appreciates his all-around game.
“Although he isn’t a superstar or even an All-star, he always helps his team, whether it be making the extra pass or knocking down a three,” Patterson says. “I try and use his team-first mentality rather than play for myself or for stats.”
