We caught up with the 5-foot-9 floor general who averaged 6.3 points, 4.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
PH: Talk to me a little about this past season. You guys had your fair share of ups and downs. Unfortunately, more downs. But take me through some of your thoughts on the season:
TJV: Well, we could’ve done better. We were young, but that’s not an excuse to me. We should’ve won more games. We were being selfish at times but eventually we started figuring things out and did pretty good.
PH: As a freshman, adjusting to high school can be very difficult. You not only had to do that, but also was expected to log heavy minutes on the varsity team as the point guard. What were the biggest adjustments that you had to make?
TJV: I had to get used to the speed of the game. I noticed how fast other guards were and knew that I had to get in the gym and get faster and get in shape
PH: You played against really good guard in the MIAA like Ace Baldwin and Ausar Crawley just to name a couple. How was that experience?
TJV: Once I got in shape it got easier for me. Mostly what I struggled with against them is just them being smarter. They’re more experienced than I am. They knew exactly what to do on the court and I was still trying to figure it all out.
PH: For people who have never seen you play, describe your game.
TJV: I’m a point guard who can score, pass, get the big involved and I communicate all of the time.
PH: Now that your first year is under your belt, what are some things that you’ll focus on improving to have a better season as a sophomore?
TJV: I have to get my teammates more involved and making sure they know what to do so we can be better as a team. I need to listen to them as well. There were times where we’d get caught up and start arguing with one another. That can’t happen.
