OLATHE, Kan. — The Jayhawk Invitational was held in Kansas City this weekend with a host of talented players stepping up and making a name for themselves.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several “bigs” who raised their profile with strong performances.
35 — Zach Davidson, 6’7, PF, 2020, Augusta, NLHA Gaddis
Davidson has terrific size at 6’7 with a long, rangy frame and a diverse and developing skill set. He is a strong post presence defensively and he shows a strong base and hold his ground against opposing big men, and also has terrific length, able to challenge and blocks shots. At the offensive end, he has a good feel for passing the ball, can stretch the floor a little with outside shooting and is a willing rebounder.
35 — Bleke Farmer, 6’7, 2020, Perry-Lecompton, Lawrence Thunder
Farmer is a big man who showed a soft shooting touch on the block and was able to score some easy baskets throughout the weekend. He showed the ability to use his size well and works hard at both ends of the floor.
25 — Jacob Owens, 6’9, PF/C, 2020, Blue Valley, Team KC Grey
Owen has all the physical tools, terrific size, length and agility, but needs to get stronger to take his game to new heights. He plays his role well, blocking shots, finishing chances around the basket and is an active big man. He runs the floor like a deer and can throw down a slam if left alone in the paint. Owen is also a terrific free throw shooter, showing good form and mechanics.
24 — Andrew Piper, 6’4, PF/C, 2021, Free State, Lawrence Thunder
A left hander, Piper has an old-school game on the block as he likes to post up and look for early position in the post. Piper showed an all-around game for a big man on Friday as he can shoot the 3 or face-up and attack off the dribble. Defensively, he works hard and doesn’t back down from bigger, older interior players.
