Boo Williams and WeR1 delivered a solid matchup on Day 1
In the final game of the night, Boo Williams and WeR1’s 17U squad faced off and they delivered with a back and forth battle. In the end, Boo Williams prevailed 76-71, showing the strength of 2020 guards Amir Nesbitt, Cam Thomas and 2021 guard Zion Harmon in their backcourt. Harmon took over down the stretch, scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second half. 2020 big man Mark Williams played a big role as well with 21 points and nine rebounds. As they learn to play together, look for them to make some noise.
For WeR1, 2019 guard Nah’shon Hyland and 2020 point guard Jhamir Brickus led the way on offense. Hyland scored 15 points and dished out four assists. Brickus went 4-of-7 from behind the arc to go along with 18 points. Jackson Begnini also had 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point land.
On defense, Taquan Woodley did his best to protect the rim with four blocks but in the end it wasn’t enough.
Woodley was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Solid 2019 prospects are still available
He was mentioned in the previous takeaway and must be mentioned again how solid unsigned senior Nah’shon Hyland is on the basketball floor. Hyland dealt with a personal tragedy for part of last year’s but now he’s back and better than ever. He’s starting to draw a lot of interest from Michigan and Maryland.
Team Loaded VA 2019 wing Tyrese Jenkins is another prospect that’s still available. At 6-foot-7, he’s got the versatility and size to play the wing or the post. His bread and butter is on the perimeter where he’s lethal with the ball in his hands. He also won the 2018 VHSL Class 5 State Player of the Year award when Varina won the state title.
Boo Williams 15U Squad is deep
One team to keep an eye on this season on the EYBL circuit is Boo Williams 15U squad. They’re led by 2022 point guard Kanye Clary, who really sets the tone with his pace on both ends. He speeds defenders up on one end and makes plays on all three levels at the other.
2022 forward Efram Johnson is another electric wing that can fill it up in a hurry. He can get to the rim and finish in the paint with ease. Defensively, 2022 big man Kok Yat and forward Anthony Davis are their standouts to watch as well. They’re a team that could generate a lot of eyes this summer.
DC Premier 16U will be a problem on the Rise Circuit
DC Premier’s 16U needed overtime to beat Boo William’s EYBL squad, but they showed that they’re a squad to be reckoned with in future games. 2021 guard Bez Mbeng showed off his ability to run the point while 2021 big man Zaakir Williamson showed off his ability to run the floor and finish in the paint.
2021 guard Kino Lilly Jr. made some big 3-pointers down the stretch while 2021 wing Wes Peterson led all scorers with 21 points. They’re another team college coaches should be lined up to see this spring and summer.
District Basketball Club 15U has some players
Ryan Cornish, Ryan Prather, Ben Williams, Chidera Nwosu and Mohamed Toure are all names to know for District Basketball Club. Each player brought their own suffocating style to the hardwood that held the 6th Man Warriors to just seven points in the second half.
Cornish is a combo guard that can distribute and shot the 3-ball. Prather is a guard with sneaky bounce that can make tough shots. Nwosu is a two-way threat on the perimeter. Williams is a floor general that sets the tone with his defense. Toure is a shot-blocking specialist that gets up and down the floor.
They’ve got the right combination of talent on their hands. Look for them this summer as well.
