Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several top point guards who raised their profile with their performance at the state tournament in Wichita.
23-Armahn Downing, 6’0, G, 2019, Washburn Rural
A smooth, athletic guard, Downing has a solid game on both ends of the floor. He has a nice pull-up jumper from the mid-range and likes to get into the lane and make plays for his teammates. He has a good feel for floor space and makes smart, timely passes in a way that is all his own.
2-Mozae Downing, 6’3, G, 2022, Lawrence Free State
A youngster with size and skill, Downing is a solid point guard for Free State who is unselfish with the ball and eager to make an impression. He shows great promise on the defensive side of the ball and is quick when it matters and uses his long arms to knock away the dribble. A player with control, Downing also showed a head for offense and nose for openings and rebounds.
12-Johnny Murdock, 5’10, G, 2019, Wichita-Southeast
A sniper from distance with the ability to score quickly and fill out a stat sheet. A true point guard who handles pressure and can lead a team through his offensive presence on the floor. Murdock can also cross up defenders and get to the basket uncontested. A skilled player with the ball.
15-Trey Quartlebaum, 6’2, G, 2019, Lawrence
An athletic guard who brings athleticism, versatility and scoring to the floor. Quartlebaum brings excellent leadership to the floor with his play on and off the ball. Much like he did in the regular season, Quartlebaum looked to score and he did so quickly. He connected from deep and got inside and scored off balance shots against taller opponents.
3-Clarence King, 6’2, G, 2019, Lawrence
A big, strong point guard who plays great with the ball and can contribute off the ball as well. He is a solid defender on the perimeter and isn’t easily shaken. He has quick feet and strong hands. On offense he showcased a catch and shoot ability and doubled down on his ability to create opportunities for himself through the air.
