Tanner (27-6), Central Coosa (21-4), Sacred Heart (21-10), and Calhoun (27-7) are the teams representing the 2A class in Birmingham. All 4 teams were ranked in the final top 10 2A rankings poll. Tanner is the highest remaining team at No. 4. Sacred Heart and Calhoun come in at 7 and 8 respectively. Central Coosa has the lowest ranking at 10. Tanner vs Central Coosa play at 4:30p. Sacred Heart and Calhoun will tip off at 7:30p.
Tanner (27-6)
How we got here: Sulligent (77-54), Sumiton Christian (51-46), and Vincent (46-33)
Players to watch: 5’11 CG Jaquan Thompson (2019), 5’8 PG Nathan Montgomery (2019), 5’11 CG Dashaun McNabb (2020)
Overview: Tanner has a history of success in Birmingham. The Rattlers are riding a 11 game win streak. This team doesn’t have a lot of size, but they are very athletic. Tanner is going to pressure teams on the defensive end and look to capitalize on their mistakes. Offensively, the Rattlers will look to push tempo and get their shooters easy looks.
Central Coosa (21-4)
How we got here: Barbour Co. (62-52), Houston Co (85-64), and Daleville (67-44)
Players to watch: 6’2 CG Joshua McGee (2019), 5’7 PG Jo’Von Richardson (2019), 6’2 SG Noel James (2020)
Overview: The Cougars have won 12 of 14 games in the second half of the season. Central is rolling into Birmingham hot. The Cougars have not suffered a loss in over a month. This team has a senior lead roster that is focused on finishing the season on top.
Sacred Heart (21-10)
How we got here: Ranburn (79-50), Fyffe (47-37), and LaFayette (55-50)
Players to watch: 6’3 CG Jayden Stone (2020) and 6’3 SG Khalil Watkins (2019). Jayden Stone is the go to player for this team. Stone averaged over 20-4-4 on the season.
Overview: Sacred Heart played a tough schedule this season, but it prepared them for this moment. The Cardinal have a 5 game win streak and are lead by ESPN Top 60 Jayden Stone. Stone is the best player in the state’s 2020 class. If Sacred Heart gets production from Watkins and other players, they will make some noise. We expect the matchup between Stone and Calhoun’s JD Davison to pack the stands.
Calhoun (27-7)
How we got here: Aliceville (58-34), Cottage Hill (41-39), and RC Hatch (79-57)
Players to watch: 6’3 CG JD Davison (2021) and 6’3 SF JaMichael Boone (2019). Davison is the top 2021 prospect in the state. JD has averaged 19-8-6 on the year. He has also chipped in 3 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. Boone has been a great complimentary player for Calhoun. Boone is averaging 16-4-2.
Overview: The Tigers have only lost once in the second half of the season. Calhoun is athletic and riding a 8 game win streak. Davison and Boone are the leaders, but everything starts with Davison. The Tigers feed off JD’s energy and big time playmaking ability on both ends of the floor. If Calhoun advances, JD Davison will have a stamp on the game.
