It was a huge game of runs as O’Connell was up as much as 30-11at one point and was then answered by a Paul VI, 14-0 run. Paul VI ended up winning 73-64 on their home floor and finished the season sweep of their rival, O’Connell. Below I take a look at five takeaways from the game.
Dug McDaniel Goes For Career High
The 5’9 freshman guard led PVI in their comeback win against Bishop O’Connell. The flashy guard finished with 26 points which was a career high for him and also contributed with 12 assists. There was a stretch in the game where he scored 9 points in 52 seconds for the Panthers. The kid is a different type of breed and it is going to be a lot of fun watching what he does as he still has three more years of high school.
Charlie Weber Bounces Back
Earlier this week I saw Bishop O’Connell play Gonzaga and Weber was not in the starting lineup and did not perform all that well. On Thursday night this was not the case, as the 2019 unsigned senior finished with 14 points. He was efficient from the field and knocked down three spot up jumpers from the elbow, two three’s and a nice put-back dunk. I would like to see O’Connell go through Weber more, especially if he shoots as well as he did last night.
William Paige Provides Spark Off Bench
Paul VI found themselves down 30-11 in the first half and had absolutely nothing going for them. Coach Farello got a technical foul during this run and it looked like O’Connell was going to come away with a win on the road. William Paige was not going to let that happen, as he began a 14-0 run for the Panthers hitting two three pointers. He was right in the middle of the action on offense and defense, hustling hard and making smart plays. Paul VI can thank Paige for being one of the main catalysts in their comeback.
Sophomore Trevor Keels Deserves WCAC Player Of The Year
This performance might have put an end to the discussion of who the WCAC Player Of The Year should be. Trevor was at it again Thursday night showing off his unbelievable three-point range and overall toughness. The sophomore finished with 16 points and 12 of those being in the 4th quarter which were all three’s. The stuff he has been doing to keep Paul VI near the top of the WCAC this year without Jeremy Roach and Anthony Harris has been incredible and has resulted in him most likely being named WCAC Player Of The Year later on in the month.
Best Atmosphere All Year
What an atmosphere between these two historical rivals. The gym was packed as you could not find an open seat to sit it. Paul VI had a great home crowd led by their student section but O’Connell brought a great crowd too. You could definitely tell O’Connell had a lot of students at the game especially when O’Connell got off to a 30-11 start. Overall, it was one of the better games and atmosphere I have been to all year.
