Continue ReadingIt was the fifth annual Coaches for a Cure hosted by Team Loaded at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, VA, and like every year this event has gone on it was full of high level talent and next level prospects. There were five games on the day, and numerous standouts. I will be breaking down some of the top players from the events, while fellow contributor Houston Wilson will have his Takeaways from the event as well. Here’s a look at the scores from the games and part one of the senior standouts from Saturday afternoon/evening.
Highland Springs 57 St. Christopher’s 53
Life Christian Academy 72 Maury 67
Blue Ridge 70 Steward School 42
Hopewell 57 Trinity Episcopal 54
LC Bird 57 John Marshall 55
Arnold Henderson | 5’8” PG | St. Christopher’s
The VCU preferred walk-on had a terrific game in St. Chris’ close loss to Highland Springs. The lead guard can really shoot the basketball when he gets it going, and he was hot early and often against the Springers. He finished with a game high 16 points and dished out four assists in the loss.
Bryan Phillips | 6’0” G | Maury
Despite a close loss to Life Christian Academy, Maury had an impressive comeback throughout the second half and they almost took the game because of it. One of the most focal points of the Commodores comeback was stocky guard Bryan Phillips who did what he did best which is get downhill, finish through traffic and fly all around in the press. He finished with 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field and he chipped in 5 rebounds and three steals.
Chase Coleman | 5’9” PG | Maury
At a glance of the stat sheet it wouldn’t seem like Coleman had that great of a game but what he did was so impactful and it didn’t always show up in the box score. He did a great job setting the tone on both ends, and in the third with Maury’s big comeback he started it on the defensive end. He got in the lane at will, made the right read and finished well at the cup. He finished with 9 points, 6 assists and four rebounds.
Dezman Wright | 5’7” G | Maury
The spark off the bench for the Commodores, Wright was lights out from deep and brought energy on the defensive end as well. A waterbug of a guard who got in defenders and jumped passing lanes, he forced a number of turnovers in the second half and helped convert them offensively as well. He finished with 16 points going 4-for-5 from deep and he had four steals as well.
Antonio “Spider” Bridy | 6’2” G | Life Christian
The crafty point guard did what he does best which is break the press, knife through the defense and put pressure on them throughout the game. He’s so tough to stay in front of, and when he gets in the lane he has great body control and finds contact a lot to get to the line. He finished with 16 points, getting 12 of them from the line and broke down the defense regularly.
Chris Rogers | 5’10” PG | Blue Ridge
Rogers showed toughness, playmaking and shotmaking ability in Blue Ridge’s route of Steward School. The lead guard was tremendous getting them into their sets, he made plays for others and he shot the ball efficiently from the midrange and from deep. He finished the game with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from deep and he pitched in 4 rebounds and three assists. He picked up an offer from Chowan following the game.
Savion Helm | 6’5” F | Blue Ridge
Helm is a guy that is trending upwards right now and would likely start at any other program in the state. Instead, he’s the versatile spark off the bench for Blue Ridge that is athletic, can shoot it and can guard multiple positions. He’s able to play on the wing when they want to go big and his length and bounce allows him to play in the post when they want to go small. He finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds, and was almost perfect shooting the ball going 7-for-7 from the floor, 3-for-3 from deep and 2-for-3 from the line.
Izeah Parker | 6’7” PF | Hopewell
The Coppin State commit didn’t get a lot of scoring opportunities because his teammate Elvin Edmonds was the high scorer of the day with 27, but Parker was impactful in a number of ways throughout the game. He played hard on both ends, used his length and bounce to alter and block shots and took advantage of the few opportunities he got. He finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks and two steals.
