Luckily for them, Virginia is full of guys who can play at all of the levels and are balling out their senior year. Over the next week or so, I’ll be doing best available lists for guards, wings and bigs. There’s a lot of names I want to get out there, so to make things easier I broke them up into different parts.
Here’s a look at the part two of the best available guards in VA.
David Penney | 5’11” | Middleburg Academy
Arguably the most under the radar guy on this list, Penney has been tearing it up for a Middleburg team who’s looking like one of the best private school teams in the state. He’s a dynamic guy off the bounce who has a good handle, changes speeds and is able to get in the lane and finish at the rim. He’s a dual threat lead guard who can score it and create for others, and he’s a natural athlete who shouldn’t have a problem with the change of speed at the next level.
Chris Rogers | 5’10” | Blue Ridge
One of the hardest working kids I’ve got to know in my time scouting, Rogers has improved immensely in his shot making ability in his two years at Blue Ridge. He has a tight handle, he competes on both ends of the floor and is a born leader who makes everyone better. He’s a great culture kid who will work his tail off from day one.
Jeffrey Armstrong | 5’11” | Massanutten
Another hard working kid, Armstrong doesn’t get a ton of time for Massanutten because they’re loaded in the backcourt, but he makes the most of his opportunities and he’s shown he can ball. He’s a stocky but quick guard who guards the ball well, rebounds well for a guard, can catch-and-shoot from deep and is a good decision maker as well.
Timon Jones | 5’10” | Fork Union
After lighting it up for four seasons at Henrico, Jones is in a new role at FUMA where he’s showing he can be the lead guard on a team that is super structured and “runs a tight ship.” Jones can make shots from all three levels off the bounce, he’s a strong and athletic guard and he’s able to get them into their sets and get guys good looks.
Bryan Phillips | 6’0” | Maury
He isn’t a traditional point guard by any means, but Phillips is a wrecking ball when he gets downhill and he’s able to put up big numbers. He has a college ready body with great strength, he’s a good athlete and he does the dirty work on both ends of the floor. He needs some fine tuning but he has some stuff you can’t teach or train.
Daryl Mackey | 6’2” | West Potomac
Another guy who isn’t a traditional PG, Mackey is a combo guard who can flat out fill it up. At times he’s a volume shooter, but once he gets it going he can put up some big time numbers. He has decent size to play both guard positions, he can catch and shoot from deep and he can create his own shot off the bounce as well.
Jaylin Stewart | 6’2” | Walsingham
A big bodied point guard who can both score and distribute, Stewart has steadily improved in his four years and should make a college very happy. He’s a good athlete at his size, he has good strength that allows him to post smaller guards and guard in the post and he can create and make shots off the bounce.
