With the season underway and closing in on the Holiday Break, Prep Hoops takes a look at several 2019 guards who have raised their profile in the early stages of the season.
Rock Jerome, 6’2, G, 2019, Eudora (pictured)
A strong guard with good size, athleticism and all-around game, Jerome is an underrated performer who can do a little bit of everything. He can play a lead guard and get Eudora into its offense, but can also score the ball off the bounce, shoot from the outside and moves well off the ball. He’s one of the better all-around performers in the state.
Drew Ellis, 6’1, G, 2019, Mulvane @ellisdrew12
Also a football standout, Ellis is a left handed sharp shooter who can put up big numbers and lead his team. He scored 38 in a win over Labette County in early December and has put together a strong season shooting the ball, and has shown the ability to run off screens, play off the ball and has range well beyond the 3-point arc.
Thomas Fritz, 6’2, G, 2019, Wamego @TJ_FRITZ132
The son of an Olympic Decathlete (Steve placed fourth in 1996 in Atlanta) and the Kansas State women’s volleyball coach (Suzie) TJ Fritz has emerged as one of the state’s top senior guards, taking the state by storm after a solid junior season and summer running with xx. Blessed with terrific athleticism and a smooth left handed shooting stroke, Fritz is averaging 23 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals and has made 16 3-pointers.
Chance Headley, 6’3, G, 2019, Clearwater @chance_headley
Headley is a talented guard with good size and a well-rounded game at both ends of the floor. He has a high basketball IQ and the ability to quickly diagnose a play and react and comes up with a lot of steals. He is a good shooter with range and has the ability to score in transition.
Ty Shelley, 6’2, G, 2020, Piper @ShelleyTyren
A terrific outside shooter, Shelley has good size at 6’3 and helps a talented Piper to spread the court and keep defenses honest. He has good range well beyond the traditional high school 3-point line and a high release point that makes it difficult for opposing teams to challenge his shot. He is putting together a strong junior season for a Piper squad that is ranked No. 2 in the latest Kansas 4A poll.
