Spruell is a strong, physical player who at 6’3 can play inside-out basketball, brings a high basketball IQ to the floor and can defend multiple positions, whether it’s a wing or a post. At the offensive end of the floor he enjoys being a coach on the floor, getting his teammates involved and can shoot from the outside or drive to the basket.
He spent the offseason competing for Marcus Denmon Elite as part of the NY2LA circuit and says the experience helped his game grow as he worked on his all-around game.
“I loved every bit of my experience,” he said. “Playing on the NY2LA circuit, you have to bring your game every time out, and that really helped me prepare for this season.
“This offseason I really worked on attacking the basket. I’ve always felt like my jumper has been there, but to be able to get the basket it helps add another dimension to my game.”
Blue Springs features a host of varsity newcomers this season with several youngsters mixed in with a handful of veterans. Spruell says the team is capable of putting things together.
“Our team is very young with not a lot of experience, but we have a lot of pieces still,” he said. “If everybody plays their role well and does their job, on any given night we can knock off a top team.”
Spruell says the biggest influence on his basketball career to date has been his dad.
“He introduced the game to me at a very young age and has coached me all the way through,” Spruell said. “He’s always been there to help me improve my game in any way and teach me the game the right way.”
A fan of the Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, Spruell says he has looked for area’s of the NBA players game to make his own.
“I love to watch his footwork which is second to none,” Spruell said. “I try to model my game off of his in any way possible. I’ve taken a few of his post and mid post moves and implemented them into my game.”
