Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several guards who raised their profile at the event.
Zach Nelson, 5’11, G, 2020, Shawnee Mission North (pictured)
Nelson led Shawnee Mission North with 14 points in a hard fought 51-44 loss in the nightcap to host Liberty on the Blue Jays’ home floor. Nelson showed a gritty style of play with the ability to create off the dribble, get to the basket and finish over bigger defenders with an array of floaters and runners.
Jax Holland, 6’1, G, 2019, Maranatha
Holland scored a game-high 24 points in a 78-55 loss to St. Pius X (Mo.) in the opening game of the tournament. He knocked down three 3-pointers and showed off the playmaking and shooting skills that have made him one of the most underrated guards in Kansas’ 2019 class.
Ethan Lincoln, 6’2, G, 2020, Free State
Lincoln scored just two points in the Firebirds runaway win over Blue Springs on Saturday, but showed toughness, and the ability to provide defensive intensity. He handles it well, showed the ability to get to the basket off the bounce and has a smooth outside shooting stroke.
Zeke Mayo, 6’2, G, 2020, Lawrence
Mayo is blessed with good size at 6’2, terrific length and a well-rounded offensive skill set. He handles it well, can create offense off the dribble, knock down perimeter shots and got to the basket. His length can be disruptive at the defensive end of the floor and he is a willing and creative passer as well.
Jaylin Richardson, 6’2, G, 2020, Schlagle
Richardson had 13 points for Schlagle in its loss on Saturday, well below what he will likely average this season, but he impacted the game all over the court, drawing attention whenever he had the ball and drew multiple defenders throughout much of the contest. He is a strong rebounder, defender and well-rounded player.
