Here Prep Hoops takes a look at several perimeter-types who have risen up the charts.
Jacob Coleman, 6’5, F/G, 2019, Basehor, MoKan Select
Previous: 15
Current: 9
This isn’t a huge jump up the list for Coleman, but he impressed this past summer running with MoKan Select and continues the tradition of MoKan’s secondary 17U team sending players on to the college level as Coleman has committed to Division II Pittsburg State. He is a versatile, well-rounded player who can play on the wing as a point forward, post up, rebound and defend multiple positions.
Jaden Okon, 6’4, G, 2019, Wichita Heights, NLHA
Previous: 16
Current: 10
Okon made his biggest move prior to the previous rankings release in the spring, but he continued his steady climb with a strong summer. He is a plus athlete with the ability to play above the rim at both ends of the floor and an emerging skill set. He is a streaky shooter who can get hot and knock down outside shots and is a strong and versatile defender.
Trey Quartlebaum, 6’2, PG, 2019, Lawrence, KC Run GMC
Previous: 13
Current: 8
Quartlebaum has taken his game to new heights over the summer and earned an opportunity to play Division I basketball as he committed to play at St. Francis-Brooklyn. He he an athletic point guard prospect with good size, handles and a high basketball IQ. He has improved his shooting and scoring and has the ability to put the ball in the basket, defend and run a team.
Trey Sides, 6’1, G, Phillipsburg, WKE
Previous: 91
Current: 14
To be fair to Sides, this rise in the rankings is less about him as it is our ability to see him play as it is difficult for us to get to see the western part of the state. However, Sides competed for Western Kansas Elite this past summer and was among the most impressive offensive players we saw from the state. He is a good athlete, can do a lot of different things well and is an elite outside shooter with a quick release and a smooth, repeatable shooting stroke. He was the Kansas 3A Player of the Year as he helped lead his team to the state championship game where they lost by a single point to Halstead. Sides is likely to be a steal for a college program somewhere.
Riley Sides, 6’1, G, Northern Valley, WKE
Previous: 92
Current: 30
Much like his cousin Trey Sides, Riley Sides has been something of an overlooked player but shined this past summer on the grassroots circuit. He is a terrific outside shooter with a quick release who can handle the ball a little on the perimeter and put up big numbers last season as a junior. He has the ability to do a variety of other things, including handle the ball, pass and get to the basket. But his calling card is his ability to knock down perimeter shots.
