PREVIEW: Underrated 2020 guards
As part of its 2018-19 preview series, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at some of the state’s top players in a variety of positions in the rising junior class.
Below are several of the most underrated guards in Kansas’ 2020 class.
Jabari Brickhouse, 6’0, G, 2020, Blue Valley West, MoKan Select
Brickhouse is an all-around guard who plays with poise. He can knock down shots, scores well in transition and showed throughout the weekend he can handle the ball under pressure and make plays off the bounce.
Drew Bortz, 6’1, G, 2020, Topeka (Kan.), Kansas Hoggs
A scrappy, hard-nosed player, Bortz brings a tough, physical brand of play. He is willing to take on a challenge at the defensive end of the court, and offensively shows the ability to carve out a path to the basket and finish tough chances in the paint.
Austin Hashagen, 6’2, G, 2020, Olathe West, Speed 2020
Hashagen is tough, physical player who brings intensity to both ends of the floor. He’s a 6’2 guard, but likes to get on the offensive glass. He’s a good passer from the wing, able to spot open cutters. Is fearless attacking the basket, drives into contact and draws a lot of fouls. Needs to work on his outside shot to really open things up and still needs to become a little more consistent around the basket.
DaQuan Johnson, 6’0, G, 2020, Parsons
Johnson is coming off a strong summer at Parsons and brings elite athleticism to the floor and the ability to impact a game in a variety of ways. He can block shots, create havoc in the passing lanes, rebound and provides energy.
Jack Souder, 6’3, G/F, 2020, Blue Valley North (Kan.), KC Spurs Black
Souder is a slasher who moves well without the ball and finds himself open a lot around the basket. He brings good size and athleticism to the floor and uses it well at both ends of the floor. He has the ability to attack the basket off the bounce and gets to the free throw line.
