PREVIEW: Kansas 2020 guards on the cusp
As part of its 2018-19 preview series, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at some of the state’s top players in a variety of positions in the rising junior class.
Below are some guard prospects in the 2020 class on the cusp of a breakout season.
Nick Arensburg, 6’2, G, 2020, Shawnee Mission East
Arensburg was an impressive performer during the recent Prep Hoops 250 Expo in Kansas. He’s got a lot of shake and bake in his game, can create his own shot and has the ability to really fill it up from behind the 3-point arc. He has some athleticism and the ability to get by his man and to the basket.
Qua’Vez Humphreys, 6’2, G, 2020, Junction City
Humphrey’s is poised for a breakout season at Junction City and he and AJ Dickerson will be a formidable 1-2 punch in the Bluejay backcourt. He has terrific size and athleticism with a strong frame and plenty of bounce. Humphrey’s is capable of creating his own shot off the bounce, can get to the basket, and has the ability to knock down perimeter shots.
Koi Jackson, 5’9, G, 2020, Olathe North
Jackson is a creative guard who creates offense well off the bounce and is terrific at getting all the way to the basket. He combines good court vision and creativity to make plays for others. Jackson likes to push the tempo and play a fast paced, up-and-down game and is terrific in transition.
Shomari Parnell, 6’0, G, 2020, Andover Central
Parnell and fellow 2020 guard Xavier Bell will form one of the state’s top 1-2 backcourt punches. He is an athletic guard, capable of making plays at the offensive end and playing lockdown defense at the other end of the court. He is probably at his best as a slasher and creating off the dribble, but also shows the ability to shoot from the outside and gets to the free throw line.
Alyus Wisdom, 6’1, G, 2020, Free State
Wisdom is coming off a strong offseason running with Lawrence based Primetime Ballerz. He is an athletic guard with a well-rounded skill set who can handle it a little, post up and score on the block and is a solid rebounder and defender. His calling card as a player might is an old-school mid-range game as Wisdon can elevate over players from 10-15 feet and knock down shots.
