Top Performer
Colten Kresl 6’0″ PG 2017 Chaparral (Powerhouse Black) – While Kresl impressed on Saturday he took it to another level Sunday. He played with great focus and had a passion that we have yet to see him play with. In a semifinal match against Factory he played a very nice all around game, collecting 8 rebounds at the half. He was very scrappy on the defensive end, active with his hands and keeping opponents in front of him. He used his quickness and change of direction to make plays in transition where he was able to find teammates and finish at the rim. He also knocked down shots from the perimeter. When Colten plays with the energy that he did Sunday he is certainly a capable low major prospect.
Stock Raisers
Steele Bennett 6’10” C 2018 Desert Vista (Factory 16U) – Bennett had yet another solid day. He looks much more comfortable than he did last season. Part of that is playing with his own age group. The other part is his added strength and experience. Steele rebounded very well and made some good passes from the high post. He’s definitely a Division-I prospect and is a kid with the tools to be a high major guy. However, how he continues to develop will determine which level of Division-I hoops he will be best at.
Majok Deng 6’5″ SF 2019 Salpointe Catholic (Powerhouse Black 15U) – Each and every game Deng continues to develop as a player. He is a lengthy wing with freaky athleticism but what’s really impressive is his feel for the game. He sees the floor very well and makes passes on time and on target. In their victory over Factory’s 16U group Majok aggressively attacked while still playing under control. He showed a nice touch from multiple levels and played with a very high motor. He’s certainly making a case as the state’s top 2019 prospect.
Saben Lee 6’2″ PG 2017 Corona del Sol (Powerhouse Black) – Lee opened up the day hot from the outside. After knocking down three straight treys in his opening game it opened up the lane for him allowing him to flush four dunks off the bounce in a half court setting. In the semis against Factory, Lee had a slow start but made some big plays on both ends. He made shots off the bounce and was very good in transition. With under 30 seconds remaining he made a shot to give Powerhouse the lead before missing his final attempt to win it at the buzzer. Consistency on his outside shot will determine Saben’s level of play but he projects as a high major guy.
DeShawn Wilson 6’6″ SF 2017 St. Mary’s (Powerhouse Black) – Wilson is a very interesting prospect. Physically he’s as intriguing as any player in the state. He’s a thick and lengthy 6’6″ with huge hands. He has a power game and bullies his way to the rim while being efficient with his dribbles. He has a methodical style and the versatility to defend inside and out. A low major prospect.
Nigel Shadd 6’9″ C 2017 Tri City (Factory) – Shadd had an outstanding Sunday. He was a monster on the glass, pursuing rebounds as soon as they came off the rim and rebounding out of his area. He ran the floor well, blocked a ton of shots at the basket, and finished everything around the rim. A high mid major prospect who is definitely raising his stock. Don’t be surprised if high majors are courting him after the July evaluation period.
New Names
Jaxson Baker 6’6″ F 2018 Brophy Prep (Powerhouse Black 16U) – Baker looked very good on Sunday. The 6’6″ sophomore showed his versatility early on both ends of the floor. He knocked shots down from the perimeter, found teammates in transition, and finished with his back to the basket. He was very poised all morning and also showed activity on the glass.
Zach Lyons 6’3″ SF 2019 Mountain View (Powerhouse Black 15U) – Lyons had a solid showing for Powerhouse. The freshman played with a lot of toughness and showed a solid motor. He was active on the glass and attacked the basket aggressively. He’s scrappy with a nice touch.
Notable Performers
2016
Lawrence Combs 6’6″ F Mountain Pointe (Powerhouse Black) – Combs was solid on Sunday. While his shot selection wasn’t the greatest he played tough, physical, and was relentless around the rim, especially on put back shots. A D2/NAIA D1 prospect.
Tarik Cool 6’1″ PG Desert Vista (AZ Power Mayberry) – AZ Power Mayberry struggled in their only game Sunday but Cool had his flashes. The unsigned senior guard made some shots from the perimeter and the mid range area but it wasn’t enough to overcome the AZ Aces Elite Unsigned Seniors. A D2/NAIA D1 prospect.
Rashaad Goolsby 6’6″ SF Hillcrest Prep (AZ Aces Elite Unsigned Seniors) – Goolsby was solid Sunday. The Hillcrest post grad had a solid opener against AZ Power Mayberry and played aggressively in his team’s loss to Phoenix Phamily. Rashaad had some tough finishes at the rim with his left hand over bigger defenders. He also scrapped on the defensive end. A D2/NAIA D1 prospect.
Nik Potthoff 6’6″ PF Cactus Shadows (AZ Aces Elite Unsigned Seniors) – Potthoff played with absolute toughness on Sunday. He was very physical and aggressively attacked bigger, more athletic players which often led to him scoring or getting fouled. A D2/NAIA D1 prospect.
Kenny Sutton 5’9″ PG Cesar Chavez (AZ Aces Elite Unsigned Seniors) – Sutton had a solid day. He was very good against AZ Power Mayberry and Phoenix Phamily, especially on the defensive end. Kenny is very scrappy and plays with great toughness. Offensively, he was really good at pushing pace in transition. A D3/NAIA D2 prospect.
2017
Noah Baumann 6’5″ G Desert Vista (Powerhouse Black) – Baumann had a solid day. In his first game he caught fire from the perimeter knocking in six threes. Against Factory he only made one three but was very efficient. A D2/NAIA D1 prospect worth a higher look.
Sean Dunn 6’9″ C Brophy Prep (AZ Power Mayberry) – Dunn had a very solid game for AZ Power Mayberry. The 6’9″ center was physical inside, had a presence on the glass, and finished through contact around the rim. A small college level prospect.
Tyler Jafary 6’5″ PF Shadow Mountain (Powerhouse Black) – Jafary played with a lot of effort and relentlessness on the glass. He pursued rebounds and was able to get a lot of catch and finish baskets and tip ins. A D3/NAIA D2 prospect.
Matt Kempton 6’5″ SF Brophy Prep (AZ Power Mayberry) – Kempton looked solid in limit minutes Sunday. While he didn’t do anything spectacular he was good on the defensive end, defending multiple positions. He has added some bulk to his frame which should only help. A D3/NAIA D2 level prospect.
Dre Marin 6’0″ PG Apollo (Factory) – Dre had a nice showing on Sunday. The Apollo guard played steady all day long, making great decisions, playing with poise, and knocking down open shots in big moments. A low major or D2/NAIA D1 prospect.
Treyvon McCray 5’11” G Copper Canyon (Factory) – Tre looked good on Sunday. As always he was very scrappy and active on the ball defensively. However, he was knocking shots down from the perimeter pretty consistently, something that could change is projection. He is a small college level prospect at this point.
Gabe McGlothan 6’5″ PF Basha (AZ Power Mayberry) – McGlothan looked improved on Sunday. The 6’5″ forward was active as always and had a lot of nice finishes around the rim. However, he also knocked the 3-ball down with consistency which–if that continues–could raise his stock tremendously. Currently he projects as a low major prospect worth a higher look.
Malik Ondigo 6’10” C TBA (Factory) – Ondigo, again, showed great tools Sunday. He runs north/south as good as any big man on the west coast. He is best in transition as he is able to beat his opponent down the floor for easy dunks. He also had a good amount of tip ins. Malik settled for some questionable outside shots. As we stated yesterday, while he is more comfortable shooting those, his shot selection needs improvement. A mid major prospect.
Chris Wright 6’0″ PG Higley (Powerhouse Red) – Wright had a solid game as he led Powerhouse Red to the championship game of the 17U Platinum B Bracket. Chris played with good poise and had some nice controlled drives to the rim. A D3/NAIA D2 prospect.
2018
Marvin Bagley 6’11” PF Sierra Canyon[CA] (Phoenix Phamily) – Bagley was dominant, again, on Sunday showing his versatile skillset in numerous ways. He was a huge key for the Phamily in their pursuit to the championship. Marvin was best in transition as he made plays and finished them as well.
Tashon Brown 5’11” PG Paradise Valley (Arizona Sting) – Brown was steady for Arizona Sting’s 17U group. The quick point guard was very scrappy on the defensive end and really pushed it in transition.
Jok Jok 6’7″ SF Moon Valley (Powerhouse Black 16U) – Jok looked very good playing solely on the wing for the first time in his career. He was aggressive, finished well in transition, and was active on the glass.
Chris Orozco 6’5″ PF Sunnyslope (Powerhouse Black 16U) – Chris was very good for Powerhouse. The undersized forward made some big time baskets in their semi-final game against I-10 Celtics. He was very patient in the post and dominated finishing over his left shoulder.
Mike Rogers 6’1″ G Cesar Chavez (I-10 Celtics 16U) – Rogers was dominant Sunday. After being a big factor in their win over AZU he opened up their semi game with the Celtics’ first 13 points. He led vocally and scored from all levels.
2019
Jovan Blackshear 5’9″ PG Shadow Mountain (I-10 Celtics 16U) – Blackshear played a distribution role for the Celtics on Sunday, pushing the pace and finding teammates. He played with a lot of activity on the defensive end, turning opponents over and creating offensive opportunities for his teammates.
Andre Harris 6’6″ PF Red Mountain (Factory 16U) – Harris is a nice player who constantly scored or drew fouls around the basket. He has a big frame, played patient with his back to the basket, and has a great feel and high skill level in the post.
Jaelen House 5’9″ G Shadow Mountain (I-10 Celtics 16U) – Like Blackshear, House made a ton of plays throughout Sunday morning and afternoon. He is a player that scores in bunches and did just that, making multiple baskets off the bounce.
Artin Quintenos 5’10” PG Cesar Chavez (I-10 Celtics 16U) – Quintenos may not get the notoriety of some of the other Celtics guards but he had a big impact on Sunday with his defensive pressure. He is a lengthy guard who is very scrappy on the ball.
Emmanuel Taban 6’5″ SF Apollo (Factory 16U) – Emmanuel definitely showed his potential in spots. He’s a lengthy wing with a lot of upside. He had a few nice moves attacking the rim against Powerhouse Black 15U and also has versatility on the defensive end.
Vean Simon 6’2″ G Gilbert Christian (Powerhouse Black 15U) – Simon was solid for Powerhouse Black. He was active on the defensive end and also the glass. He hit a big outside shot to help lift PHH over Factory’s 16U group.
