Right now the young point guard’s recruitment has been slow, but he’s hoping — with the exposure his new found grassroots team provides — he’ll see a spike in his recruitment before summer’s end.
“I’ve received a letter from Miami of Ohio, that’s it so far,” said Mathis.
“I’m definitely starting to think about it more as I get ready for my junior year; just think about what type of college, the size of the college, and mid-major or high major if I’m blessed enough to play for them. But I hope to play in front of many coaches and hopefully get in contact with some and get the ball rolling as I head into my junior year.”
Mathis had played with East Louisville Bulls in past offseasons, recently though he was reached out to by separate high profile grassroots programs requesting him for a tryout.
“I was blessed to have a couple of choices, I traveled up to Cleveland recently to tryout with Ohio Basketball Club, and I also had the privilege to try out with Team Manimal. Both of them worked out good, but I decided to play with Team Manimal on the Adidas Gauntlet this year,” said Mathis, who explained what his goals are for the offseason.
“I definitely want to establish myself in my class as one of the better point guards, and definitely get my rank up. Just get my name out there a little more and perform the best I can in front of some college coaches.”
Mathis was a starting point guard all season for the Bearcats, he reflected on a successful sophomore season.
“As a point guard one of my strengths is I’m a true point guard. I feel like I’m one of the few point guards out there who is a true point, that really is a floor general, gets their team involved, and is able to score when needed, and can also dish out assists,” said Mathis, who sited where he needs to see improvements with his game.
“I want to work on making quicker decisions — I need to come down the court and make the right decision nine times out of ten, and do it quickly and decisively.”
