HARDWOOD: Kansas’ Stock Risers (wings)
The Hardwood Classic wrapped up action on Sunday with several standout performances taking place in the final stages of the tournament.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several in-state players who stood out throughout the event.
6 — Isaiah Gavin, 6’5, G/F, St. Thomas Aquinas, MoKan Select (pictured)
A long, rangy wing with good athleticism, Gavin runs the floor well and has a good feel for passing the ball and playing in transition. He is at his best at the defensive end where he is capable of defending multiple positions thanks to a long frame and quick feet. At the offensive end of the floor, Gavin lets the game come to him and does a lot of dirty work in the plaint, cleaning up misses and staying active on the baseline.
8 — Jacob Coleman, 6’6, G, 2019, Basehor-Linwood, MoKan Select
Coleman has terrific size at 6’6 and a well-rounded skill set, able to play inside-out basketball. He can handle the ball, is even capable of running the point, and can shoot from the outside. But he has shown he is versatile enough to post up and score around the basket. He recently picked up his first offer from NCAA Division II program Pittsburg State.
24 — DeShawn English, 6’6, F, 2018, Pittsburg, VIctory
Word is English plans to attend Link Year Prep in Branson after a standout season at Pittsburg. He has an emerging skill set and has grown more confident on the perimeter, whether it is knocking down outside shots or creating off the dribble. He brings some versatility at the defensive end of the floor and can block shots around the basket, or move his feet on the perimeter. English played with tremendous energy on Saturday, even in a challenging loss to MoKan Elite.
3 — Jake Potthoff, 6’6, G, 2019, Shawnee Mission South, MoKan Select
Potthoff is a skilled guard who can handle it and can get to the basket and finish in traffic. He has a good feel for scoring around the rim and can knock down outside shots as well. Potthoff has good size for a wing player at 6’6 and has the ability to see over a defense and make smart passes.
