Prep Hoops Louisiana Mr. Basketball: Robert Williams
Robert Williams (6’9 F, 2016) of North Caddo is our vote for Mr. Basketball in Louisiana. The options for this award were plenty and that included a sophomore which would mean the first ever sophomore to win in Louisiana.Williams is the first Mr. Basketball for North Caddo and the 2nd from Louisiana to sign with Texas A&M. The other was Bernard King in 1999 from Gibsland-Coleman.
Robert Williams will be the 2nd Mr. Basketball from Louisiana to sign with Texas A&M.Two of the past three winners were from Madison Prep and went on to play at LSU in Jarell Martin in 2013 and Brandon Sampson in 2015. In 2014 it was Reginal Johnson, Jr. from Richwood who is now at Alcorn State. Before that in 2012, it is DeQuavious Wagner from Peabody who played at Arkansas before transferring to Angelo State and is playing his senior season back home at LSU-Alexandria for the #2 overall seed in the NAIA National Tournament.
Robert Williams averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and while the blocks weren’t listed, there is little doubt he averaged over 5 for the season. His versatility and ability to play inside or out with the athleticism to cover the floor makes him extremely valuable for Texas A&M going forward. The 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Aggies lose two versatile forwards in Jalen Jones and Danuel House where Williams is sure to slot in.
Williams led North Caddo back to the Top 28 where they fell in double overtime to the eventual winners, Madison Prep. He officially had 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 blocks but ask anyone in attendance and it felt like quite a number more in the rebounds and block categories. He will surely be missed at North Caddo.
