GASO WICHITA: Top Stock Risers (2019)
The Great American Shootout Midwest wrapped up play on Sunday at Wichita Hoops Facility in Bel Aire, Kan. with several standout performances taking place in the final stages of bracket play.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several of the top stock risers from Kansas who stood out throughout the weekend.
4 — Riley Sides, 6’1, G, 2019, Northern Valley (Kan.), WKE Eddy (pictured)
Riley Sides is the state’s reigning Class 1-AA Player of the Year and it’s easy to see why. He has an athletic frame and does a little bit of everything at a high level — he rebounds, handles the ball and can shoot with range out past the 3-point arc. His calling card however might be his outside shooting and Sides displayed a smooth, repeatable stroke, terrific range out beyond the arc and the ability to get his shot off quickly and under duress. He and WKE Eddy teammate Trey Sides are both among the more underrated players we saw throughout the weekend.
24 — Keenan Miller, 6’4, G, 2019, Wichita South (Kan.), River City 17U Blue
Miller continues to raise his profile this offseason as he showcased the ability to put the ball in the basket from all three levels. Miller has good size and athleticism, can handle the ball, create his own shot off the bounce and can get to the bucket and finish tough chances in traffic.
14 — Carlos Montiel, 6’3, F, 2019, Hugenot, WKE Eddy
One of the better players most fans have likely never heard of, Montiel has a big, strong fame and plays much bigger than his listed 6’3 height. He combines a big frame with a well-rounded game and an unorthodox offensive game. He handles it well, likes to drive to the basket and is a good playmaker and shooter from the 3-point arc. He is a tough match-up for most opponents as bigger players struggled to contain him on the perimeter but smaller players struggle with him in the paint.
10 — Jaden Okon, 6’4, SG, 2019, Heights, NLHA 17U
Okon is an elite-level athlete, capable of playing above the rim at both ends of the floor. His offensive game is still a work in progress at times, but he shows a lot of tools. He can knock down 3-pointers, handles it a little and can get to the basket off the bounce. He is explosive in the open court, and as a defender is capable of blocking shots and locking up opponents. NLHA ran a lot of action for him to take advantages of mismatches in the post where he was able to take advantage of his size. Okon is still growing as a player but he showed in Wichita he is a player to watch.
10 —Zeth Unruh, 6’6, F, 2019, Jefferson West, WCS Team Driven
At 6’6, Unruh has good size and a well-rounded skill set for a wing player to match. He is comfortable playing on the perimeter, handling the ball and can stick open 3-pointers. Defensively, Unruh did a good job of chasing guards on the perimeter as well as getting on the defensive glass and giving his team a presence in the paint as well.
