Recruiting Report: Elvin Edmonds (2021)
There weren’t many freshmen in the state who came in with the expectations of Hopewell guard Elvin Edmond. The 6’2” combo guard, whose father is a well respected coach, played a solid role on Team Loaded 15U as a rising freshman and was expected to start and carry a big load for a talented Hopewell team from the beginning.
He did not disappoint. Edmonds averaged an impressive 18.3 points, 4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, leading his team to the playoffs where they eventually fell to Phoebus in the state quarterfinals.
With all that pressure and hype around him, Edmonds has remained humble. A quiet kid that lets his game do the talking, he’s not just one of the most talented kids in his class, he’s also one of the hardest working.
“I’m just staying in the gym, keep working hard, communicating with everybody and always trying to be a better teammate,” Edmonds said.
His hard work has paid off though, as he’s already seeing interest from college coaches all over the east coast. He holds offers from ODU, Hampton, Winthrop and JMU, and has taken a recent unofficial visit to Longwood. A high academic kid who already has a 4.4 GPA, he has a high IQ on and off the court and says that academics will always be considered a big role in when it comes time to make his decision.
After a standout freshman year, Edmonds continues to impress this summer. On the court, you can tell that he’s a coach’s son, and he says he really enjoys playing for his Dad and knows that he’s lucky to have a guy like him to learn from.
“I love it, I’ve been playing with him my whole life and I’ve learned a lot from him,” he said. “I really want to bring him a state championship moving forward.”
A natural scorer, Edmonds is a lights out shooter from deep and known for his deep range and consistent ability to knock it down off the catch. He’s a three level scorer who can use his body to finish in the lane, but he knows he needs to continue to develop in all aspects moving forward.
“I can score the ball, but I know I need to get better on defense and I need to continue to work on being a more vocal leader and just being a leader in general,” he said.
While he’s a great shooter off the catch, he’s been working on transitioning more to a point guard role moving forward. Right now, he considers himself a combo, but knows he needs to be able to create for others and get them into sets with the ball in his hands.
“I consider myself a combo guard, but I like to play on the ball more than off. I need to continue to improve my handle to become more of a true point guard.”
With college coaches already keeping him on the radar, Edmonds is going to continue to produce at a high rate and be one of the best young guards in the Richmond area moving forward.
