2019 Rankings Updates: Richmond Area Wings (Part 2)
We’re heading into the senior season of the 2019 class, one that we at Prep Hoops VA have had the pleasure of watching grow from when they were just freshmen. This class has seen new players come in, some players leave for programs outside of the state, and have seen some massive changes over the years. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone in July and August, and come time for the new season to start we’re sure there will be even more changes coming.
Over the next few weeks we will be breaking down the rankings by positions and locations. With that being said, here’s a look at part two the wings in the Richmond Area of VA that we ranked in the 2019 rankings.
*Editors Note: These breakdowns are based on where the players play high school basketball at.
Charles Tart | 6’4” WF | Varina (#65 Overall)
A very valuable player for Varina as a sixth man on their state championship team, Tart is a three and d guy who has good length and good athleticism. He can guard multiple positions, was good in the press with his length and in their matchup zone with his ability to switch pretty much everything. He made open shots in the half court, rebounded well on both ends and brought energy off the bench when they needed a momentum swing. He was also impressive in transition, where he was able to use his athleticism to finish above the rim and run down defenders for blocks. He holds an offer from D2 Virginia Union.
Lance Monteiro | 6’3” WG | Huguenot/VA Havoc (#86 Overall)
(Photo via Matt Hatfield of Virginiapreps.com)Monteiro debuts in our rankings at 86 after a good junior season at Huguenot, but his stock is going up and up and he’ll likely continue to climb in our rankings. The shooting guard has the ability to score it in bunches, and he can do it from all three levels. He’s a shot maker off the catch and off the bounce, and he showed that last year and has continued to get better with it throughout the spring and summer. He has effortless range, he can hit the pull-up off a couple dribbles and with his decent size he should be able to pull some offers here moving forward.
Jordan Crump | 6’2” WG | Highland Springs (#119 Overall)
Crump’s a volume shooter who once he gets it going he’s going to torch you from deep. He has good elevation on his shot, a high follow through and effortless range. He has supreme confidence in his shot, and even when he’s in a shooting slump he’s the kind of kid that you need to let shoot himself out of it because once he gets it going he can really fill it up. He’s also a good athlete who can finish at and above the rim in traffic, and he’s able to put up some big numbers on any given day..
Jonathan Mondrey | 6’2” WG | Monacan (#121 Overall)
A glue guy whose team always seems to play better with him in the game, Mondrey can do a little bit of everything. He can make open shots from deep, he attacks the glass on both ends, he’s a capable and smart defender and he understands game situations really well. He has good length and rebounds well on both ends of the floor, and he’s an even keeled player who keeps his cool throughout the game. Simply the kid you love to have on your team.
Damon Werts | 6’3” WG | Highland Springs (#135 Overall)
One of the most athletic kids on this entire list, Werts is a big time finisher above the rim. In transition, do not try to take a charge if he’s running the wing because he will put you on a poster. He isn’t the most skilled wing, but he has great physical and athletic tools and when he uses them right he brings enormous energy to his team. He rebounds well for a wing, including big time put backs, and he can jump passing lanes in the press and rotate help side to block shots.
Patrick Gee | 6’5” WF | Prince George (#138 Overall)
A kid I’m intrigued with and want to see more of, Gee is a hybrid forward that can play the small ball four or play on the wing if you go big. At 6’5”, he’s physically impressive as he’s in great shape with a good frame. Offensively, he really shines in the midrange, where he’s money at the high post off the catch or he can make shots off of a couple of dribbles. He cleans up the glass on both ends, he’s a good athlete and he’s an efficient scorer who gets to his spots and makes shots from all three levels.
Alphonzo Mason | 6’1” WG | Meadowbrook (#142 Overall)
A kid who I’ve watched a good amount since he was a freshman on varsity, Mason has steadily improved into a two guard who makes shots and is a good secondary ball handler. He has a good frame and while he isn’t a super explosive athlete, he’s a smooth athlete with the ball in his hands and he can get to his spots and score it. He makes open shots from deep, finishes around the basket in transition and is just a solid player on both ends of the floor.
