There have been two area programs which have reached out to the Coopersville guard — one Division III school, and one NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) school.
“I recently went to a Hope game, a couple weeks ago they invited me. And I’ve gotten a little bit of interest from Grace Bible, my brother plays there,” said Dekkenga, Michigan’s 85th-ranked 2017.
“I hope I have a good AAU season this year, and hope some coaches start looking at me so I can play basketball at a higher level.”
Dekkenga mentioned what it is he’ll be working to improve this spring and summer with the Storm.
“I need to get bigger, get a little bit stronger, and work on my defense and my shooting,” he said.
A 5-foot-10 combo guard, Dekkenga is capable of playing both guard spots effectively, and broke down his playing style to PHM.
“I feel like I’m a pretty good athlete, and I attack the rim pretty good. I’m still working on my shot a little bit. But I think I have a pretty good IQ. I know where people are at, and I can set people up on offense,” said Dekkenga, who plays point guard with his high school team and shooting guard in the offseason.
“I would like point guard more at the next level, but shooting guard would be fine too. Wherever I’m needed I can play.”
