This time it was on Kaskaskia’s floor and they came out on fire early behind their freshman shooting guard Joffery Brown. Kaskaskia went on to get the win after a late Logan rally by a final of 90-73. Here we break down the prospects in the contest.
SG Joffery Brown (Kaskaskia – Freshman)
I have always been a fan of this underrated 6’2” shooting guard from St. Joseph’s. While not the most athletic guard he consistently produces and finds a way to get the job done. Brown had a monster start to the contest. He was on fire early hitting jumpers from mid-range which has always been a strength of his, but also drilled a pair of threes showing extended range which he didn’t have in high school. In the second half it was more about him attacking the cup with his strength. He has a knack for getting in the lane with his crafty handles and finishing at the cup by keeping the ball away from his defender. Also made a couple nice passes in the second half. He had 29 points in the win. Should be on low-major radar as a 2017 recruit.
SG Elijah Watson (Kaskaskia – Sophomore)
Despite KC opening up a monster lead at the half their top sophomore Watson was held scoreless. The 6’2” shooting guard got it going in the second stanza. He was powerful driving to the hoop showing good quickness with his handles. Got to the rim and in the paint where he scored. Also did a nice job defensively on the perimeter with active hands and getting in passing lanes. He had 10 points. High level D2 kid that in the right spot could be low-major.
SG Dwight Richards (Kaskaskia – Sophomore)
KC likes their guards big and stocky. Richards also fits that mold just like the two above. The thick bodied wing is a power guard that works best from 15 feet and in. Crafty getting in the lane and can knock down a mid-range jumper. He had 12 points.
SG Devontavius Payne (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Logan’s leading scorer looked like he was about to go off for a huge game at the start with six quick points. The lefty guard has a smooth perimeter game and usually excels shooting from beyond the arc. He couldn’t find the feel on it in this contest and really struggled from deep. Payne did help them get back in the game in the second half using his defensive pressure and speed in the open floor to create turnovers and converting them on the other end with acrobatic layups. At times he was a bit loose with the rock. Overall solid, but not great game for Payne who finished with 17 points. Mid-major to low-major prospect.
SF Michael Tucker (John A Logan – Freshman)
Tucker is the most physical specimen on the floor in most games he plays. At 6’7” he is built like an outside linebacker with strength and athleticism. He fades in and out of the game with his concentration, but there is no denying his talent. In the second half he showed it off working well out of the post where he had a couple nice moves including a sweet right hand hook shot. Can also put it on the deck and attack through contact. Misses some bunnies at times. Cleaning that up and playing more consistent throughout games will be key for Tucker. He had 14 points. Mid-major prospect with high ceiling.
PF Tamas Bruce (John A Logan – Sophomore)
At 6’7” Bruce does a lot of things you have to like. He is very athletic and gets up and down the floor with relative ease. The bouncy four man is an adept offensive rebounder that is quick to the offensive glass for put backs. Struggles when he has to put it on the deck as he had several turnovers in this one. Low-major prospect with mid-major potential. He had 11 points.
