2028 Rankings Update: Class 3A and 4A Newcomer Guards

Slaughter enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for the Cardinals, leading the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game while showcasing that he can do so from all three levels. He shot nearly 37% from the 3-point line and showed that he can put the ball on the floor and create looks off the dribble.     A quick guard who can score from anywhere, Flores led the Stars in scoring (12.3), rebounding (4.1), and steals (1.4) per game last season. He moves his feet well on the defensive end and has quick hands, and he's a solid shooting threat, burying just under 38% of his 3-point attempts as a sophomore.     Hopkins is a strong, athletic guard who uses his physicality to his advantage on the offensive end, bullying his way to the rim for finishes time after time. He needs to improve as a shooter (26% from 3), but his handles, first step, and physicality make him a difficult guard to slow down and keep out of the paint.     Meisner got pretty much no varsity run as a sophomore for the Warriors, but they were one of 4A's best teams and filled with seniors, so that shouldn't come as a surprise. He's an intelligent guard who handles it well, can knock down shots from deep off the dribble or the catch, and he sets his teammates up well. Look for him to step into the Warriors rotation as a junior.     Burns started 22 games for the Bulldogs as a sophomore, averaging 13.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. He primarily plays off the ball, but has shown flashes of secondary playmaking. He shoots it pretty well from distance (36.5%) and can attack overly aggressive closeouts off the dribble.     Martin is a typical PV guard - tough defender, intelligent, physical. He averaged 7.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore and will step into a much bigger role following the losses of the other six top scorers from last year's group.     The headliner of a solid 2028 class at Fort Dodge, Pederson led the Dodgers in scoring (9.5) and rebounding (4.5) as a sophomore. He's a good athlete who can get downhill and get to the rim off the dribble.     Morris started all 21 games last season and is a big scorer for the Grayhounds, averaging 16.7 points per game. He's a capable shooting threat (35.3%), but is at his best when he's using his speed and ball-handling to play downhill and attack the rim or get to the free-throw line.     Krogh appeared in 23 games last season for the state champion Bombers. Each of those appearances came in mop-up duty, but gave a sense of what the Bombers can expect heading into his junior season - playmaking and 3-point shooting. He didn't shoot it well in his limited minutes, but he showed plenty of confidence from deep.     VanEngelenhoven led the Bulldogs in scoring last season, averaging 12.2 points per game to go with 4.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 steals. He's a tough, athletic guard who can get to the rim or knock down shots from distance off the catch.     Kluesner and the next player on this list are key pieces of a strong 2028 class in Epworth. He's a small, but quick and talented, guard who puts pressure on opposing teams with his speed and ability to create looks off the dribble for himself and teammates. He dished out a team-high 3.1 assists per game as a sophomore.     Urbain is an off-ball guard who does a good job getting to the rim with good off-ball movement. His jumper needs to improve, but he's an intelligent player who can score and contribute on the glass.     Another Bomber guard who played sparingly in blowouts last season, DeYoung is a quick guard who can put pressure on opposing teams with his speed on both ends of the floor. Expect him to step into a much larger role as a junior.
