Tempe High School Summer League: McClintock High School top performers
The McClintock Chargers basketball team played two games on June 4 in the Tempe Youth Hoops Boys High School Competitive League, including a lopsided victory over NFL Yet College Preparatory Academy. Here are McClintock’s four top performers:
- Josh Baker: Sr.
McClintock’s leading scorer in the 2017-18 season, Baker was true to form early, hitting his first three shots from the field, including two three-pointers, for the Chargers’ first eight points of the game. His jumper was falling all night, and he was effective in getting the rest of his teammates involved on the offensive end. He also accumulated a few steals on defense that led to fast breaks.
- Jalen Calvert: Sr.
The Charger center was unstoppable down low, securing rebounds on both ends of the floor. He provided several second-chance points for McClintock on put-backs, and ran the floor in transition to finish off breaks with easy lay ups and dunks. He also provided solid rim protection for the Chargers, making it hard for NFL Yet to get anything easy at the rim.
- Donavan Williams: Sr.
McClintock smothered the Eagles on defense, and Williams was a heavy contributor, accumulating steals and getting the Chargers out in transition following rebounds. Though he started the game, Williams served as a complementary lead guard when Baker was on the bench, running the offense at just about the same clip with substitutes in the game.
- Armani Williams: Jr.
Williams scored his first two points with the highlight play of the game, a ferocious right-handed dunk in transition off a steal by Baker. His ability to hit open three-pointers made it difficult for NFL Yet to cheat too close to the paint on defense. He had a few missed dunks that likely would have just been lay ups in a more competitive setting, but he was effective all game.
