Prospect Spotlight: Cade McGaugh (2019)
Maize 2019 guard Cade McGaugh is off to a strong start this spring competing alongside a group of players from Missouri with Epps Elite.
A 6’3, 165 wing player, McGaugh brings length, athleticism and a diverse skill set to the court. McGaugh is a good shooter from the 3-point line, can create his own shot and get to the basket, finish around the rim and throw down an occasional dunk or two.
Competing as part of a talented Maize squad that went 17-5 last season, McGaugh averaged 6.1 points and shot nearly 50 percent from the field while knocking down 17 3-pointers, a total that was second on the team. It was McGaugh’s first year at the school.
“The fit for me was perfect,” McGaugh said. “Coach Grill (Chris) really had an impact on my game with teaching me new things almost everyday and everyday in practice working on different skills for in game situations.
“My team was the best thing about the season. I wouldn’t trade anything for those guys.”
McGaugh said he has enjoyed the experience of playing with Epps Elite’s 17U squad. The team is athletic and likes to play the game at a fast pace. McGaugh finished the weekend at the Midwest Live! Tournament in Lawrence a week ago averaging 16 points as his team went 2-3 overall.
“We have some good players that can get by anyone at anytime and create a shot for everyone, the experience has been awesome so far,” he said. “We went 2-3 not what we wanted but it’s our first tournament all playing together. I hope to gain exposure to college coaches along with my teammates, we are a very good group of guys.”
McGaugh says he is spending the offseason working on every aspect of his game, including shooting, dribbling, defense and his basketball IQ.
“With being a 6’3 guard, I want to be able to handle the ball like a smaller guard and also be a deadeye shooter for this upcoming high school season,” he says.
