I attended the annual Behan Strong event honoring former SJC HC Pat Behan, with the proceeds funding his treatment and care for ALS (Link to donate here). Four great varsity matchups after a Freshman and JV game was a great environment to catch some high level hoops as we turn the page to a new year. First, we'll touch on the guards that stood out. Let's dive in!

-Mbuyamba really battled in this one as a physical presence in the paint at both ends of the floor that also gives the Purple Eagles a versatile defender on the back line. His impact on the glass was immediately felt with an and1 putback to start off the game and 4 offensive rebounds in the 1H alone. Mbuyamba came out hot with a personal 6-0 run with a made 3 and a reverse layup in traffic that sent him to the line once more. If he can turn in a portion of his perimeter catches into blow-by's to get to the rim to either draw a foul or score, his C+S opportunities on the perimeter should be more in rhythm and fall at a consistent clip.

-One of the better performances that I've seen from Miller as he was a bright spot for Ryken's offense. Miller was catching and finishing well in traffic in the paint, switching ends quickly and making good decisions in transition, and has made improvements to his pivots in the paint. The improved footwork is creating much better finishing angles that are allowing him to convert floaters, finger rolls, and put backs at a higher clip.

-A captain on the gridiron for Episcopal, I thought Baker gave his team a nice lift in a neutral site win over one of the better public schools in the area. Baker finished a drop-off dime at the rim to score through the double team and earn himself a trip to the FT line, hit two huge 3s to stave off a late JR run, and scored on a runout to close things out for his team. His physical style of play and willingness to do the dirty work was huge for his team in this win.

-Really like the role that Cerny has carved out as one of the leaders on a scrappy St. Mary's team with several 20+ point performances under his belt to start the year. Cerny served as an effective connector from the wings that collected several hockey assists on 1-more passes around the horn, was in the right place defensively for most of the contest, and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty rebounding the basketball in the paint. Cerny finished all of his opportunities inside the arc, filled the wings nicely in transition, and communicated well on the back line of the defense.

-Abraham was plagued with foul trouble for most of the game as a help defender that caught a tough whistle contesting shots around the basket. He did, however, find a way to make an impact at the offensive end by hitting all 3 of his field goal attempts on a day where the Tigers really struggled shooting the basketball. Abraham's value as a floor-spacer that has improved his handle to attack closeouts more effectively makes him a solid connector off the bounce that is looking to make plays for his teammates.
