The Canam basketball tournament brought 8 teams to Western Reserve Academy in a 4 USA Vs 4 Canada weekend event where each team plays three games. In this article I'll break down my guard standouts from Friday's action.

Hailey was playing with a ton of confidence on Friday with a flurry of buckets in the first half to help put some big separation between his team and the opposition. A creative driver of the basketball, Hailey had some tough running finishes in the half court where he showed soft touch while attacking full speed downhill to the rim. A capable shot maker from the outside as well, Hailey can hurt you in a variety of ways. I expect Hailey to fight for minutes as a freshman with UMass next season.

One of my favorite players to just watch compete, Sprague is one tough kid. I like how everything Sprague contributes to his team will translate to the college level with off ball cutting, playing off two feet and spot-up jumpers. Never looking rushed or out of control, Sprague should have an easy time transitioning to a college offense next season. I think Division II programs should be all over Sprague and is well worth a look at the low major level as well.

A player who comes off the bench and gives his all, Suardini was making hustle play after hustle play on Friday evening. I was also impressed with his perimeter shooting ability, knocking down open looks when the ball was swung to him. An unselfish player as well, Suardini checks a lot of boxes that you'd want a bench piece to bring to the table. Smart, makes shots, plays hard, unselfish. Sounds like a winning combo to me.

White had a clutch drive and score to send his Spire post grad teams game to overtime where he made more plays at the rim to help his team escape with the win. White has a quick first step and can make acrobatic finishes in the paint. When White attacked downhill he made some basic reads to find the open man. Hoping to see White shoot the ball on the perimeter with more confidence, right now he's a slashing guard looking to get to the rim whenever possible.

The engine to Polaris Prep's offense on Friday, Pejcinovski made some clutch perimeter shots. A big 3-pointer to end the first half followed by an and-1 3-pointer late in the game made me believe Polaris Prep would find a way to come out with the win. Also making a tough righty scoop layup on the left side, Pejcinovski was fearless as an attacker. If Polaris Prep took a little better care of the basketball, they had chances to finish the game in regulation before eventually falling in the overtime frame.

The most dominant player on the floor for St Jude's blowout win over Erie Prep, Grant looked dynamic as a guard scorer and playmaker. Grant made smart decisions off a ball screen and was a power athlete off two feet at the rim. While he made one corner 3-pointer, Grant preferred to get to the rim and wanted to attack downhill with the ball in his dominant right hand. Grant's frame almost looks like more of a football build with an incredibly strong upper body. I'll be curious if Grant's able to find so much success in the paint at the college level, he was reliant on drives on Friday.
