2A Mr. Basketball Candidates
The top teams in 2A have been quite impressive this season. Rancho Solano could make the case that they are one of the top 25 teams in the entire state of AZ. While they are the favorite to win it all, Alchesay last in the state title to Gilbert Christian and returns the vast majority of their team. With the state tournament ramping up, here are the top players to watch in 2A and our Mr. Basketball candidates.
Top 5 2A Mr. Basketball Candidates
Nikc Jackson 6’8 PF 2018 Rancho Solano (Air Force)
Jackson has been the game changer for Rancho. Rancho already had plenty of talent. However, he has brought them another athletic and physical piece that can change the game for them offensively and defensively. Jackson has taken over the spot as the leading scorer and rebounder for the team. He is a walking double-double who will make a huge impact in the state tournament.
Ethan Spry 6’8 PF 2019 Scottsdale Christian
Scottsdale Christian has had to play without talented guard Reed Myers and they have found a way to have a lot of success. One of the biggest reasons that they have found a way to win games is Ethan Spry. The big man has been dominating on the block and has demonstrated a consistent mid-range jumper. While Scottsdale Christian might be a long shot to win the state title this year, they are certainly capable of competing and making a lot of noise.
Tristan Upton 6’3 SF 2018 Alchesay
Alchesay is right back in the mix of it as was anticipated. They will have an uphill battle with knocking off Rancho Solano. However, they are gritty and tough while being loaded with capable shooters. Upton’s toughness and versatility make him one of the biggest keys to the team’s success. He constantly finds a way to make an impact in the game. He is solid on the glass and is a really efficient scorer. Moreover, he will need to continue to play like a Mr. Basketball candidate to down the stretch.
Jared Perry 6’8 PF/C 2018 Paradise Honors
Paradise Honors received some key transfers that have aided them in their depth substantially. However, it has been the strong play of Perry that has kept this team afloat. The big man is averaging a double-double and has improved greatly compared to last year. He is a good athlete who competes at a high level as well. Paradise Honors has played quite well this season which has put Perry into the conversation for Mr. Basketball.
Dawson Pruszynski 6’4 PF 2019 Pima
Pima has been one of the most impressive teams in 2A this season due in large part to Pruszynski and Thompson. Both of these candidates are producing at a high level which has enabled Pima to get to 23-2. While the season is winding down, Pruszynski is hoping that is strong play will enable Pima to add some games to their schedule and potential win a state title. His size and skill set will be crucial to the success of the team in the state tournament.
