Owing to his late hire and newness to the region. New Ferris St head coach Bobby Pietrack held the championship program's first elite camp of the spring/summer this past weekend.

A solid 45 player turnout provided plenty of high level competition. Following are some standouts from the 2027 class… plus one that caught my eye in the 2028 class as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140516' first='Makai' last='Campos'] 5-11 Holland West Ottawa (pictured) The Lakshore area point guard must really like the Bulldog gymnasium. After playing outstanding in last year's iteration. Campos put together another strong day. Not the fastest point guard you will see, but you can't label him slow either. The skeleton key is deep range on the perimeter. When you have to pick him up thirty feet from the basket, he has more than enough speed to capitalize on that advantage. Uses ball screens well and plays like a seasoned veteran in two man situations. Knows what to do with a snake/crab dribble when he gets a defender on his hip. The next step in his development is improved explosion and finishing at the rim. Coming off a standout spring/summer grassroots campaign with West Michigan Premier. Earned an offer from the host school. One of the breakout 2027 prospects in the state.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140474' first='Braylon' last='Taylor'] 5-10 Grand Rapids Christian The story of the camp was Campos and Taylor essentially trading long range haymakers during the scrimmage portion of the camp. Taylor is smaller than Campos but has similar skillset. Excelled in two man situations. Coaches son, but more importantly plays like it. With his size, could easily be smothered on high hedges. However has the quickness and intelligence to stay out of those situations. About the size. While still very thin, appears to have added a few inches to his frame. Size is really all that is missing. As an advanced ball handler and live dribbler passer. The point guard package is already there.

[player_tooltip player_id='2877015' first='Ace' last='Walters'] 5-11 Clarkston When you add all of Walters' background info together. You get what you would expect. Son of former NBA player and coach, who plays at program long lauded for their fundamentals. Walters is a no frills point guard who simply doesn't make mistakes. Has an uncanny ability to get to the basket despite not being the quickest prospect. Does not over penetrate and is good drop off passer when the defense closes on him. Is left handed but goes both ways on drives. Has a nice outside shot that keeps defenses honest.

[player_tooltip player_id='2139970' first='Dean' last='Lewis'] 6-5 Walled Lake Western Comimg off a strong spring/summer. Lewis continued to play well in Big Rapids. Lewis still appears to be growing into his body. That is not bad thing as it has expanded from about 6-2 to 6-5 in the past year. Retains the lead guard ability that he hinted at with his smaller size. Gets to the basket with ease and has the size to shoot over most defenders. Has a very lanky frame that helps him play closer to 6-7 “vertically.” I used vertically as a qualifier intentionally. Will need to add strength in both his upper and lower body to be more of a factor on the block. If he can add that and improve his outside shot. Will have pretty close to a complete offensive arsenal. Has plenty of time to do it as a 2027 prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id='2613938' first='Trevon' last='Johnson'] 6-2 Holt A little off the radar as the Lansing area guard spent most of year on JV in the deep Ram program. Johnson's backcourt versatility stood out to me. At 6-2, showed the ability to play both backcourt spots with ease. Good lateral quickness allowed him to get to his spots easily and be a factor defensively. Elevated easily at rim with smooth but explosive elevation. Good enough ball handler to play the point, but won't need to with the presence of 2026 [player_tooltip player_id='1588212' first='Brandon' last='Mercer II'] Without that experience it will be intriguing to how he develops in the next two years.

[player_tooltip player_id='2442240' first='Jacob' last='Ayers'] 6-3 Spring Lake We will end where we started. On the Lakeshore where there is a lot of talent in Michigan's 2028 class. Ayers is trying to break into the discussion in that crowded field. Ayers is plus shooter with good size. Gets into the shooting motion quickly with a well schooled release. More than just a shooter already. Good ball handler who sees the court well. Has a lengthy frame that should fill out nicely as he ages. A lot of potential for the product of the deep [program_tooltip program_id='2077017' first='Grand' last='Rapids Storm'] grassroots program.
