Five Takeaways: Blue Valley (Kan.)-Lee’s Summit North (Mo.)
LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — The fourth game of the 810varsity Showcase featured Lee’s Summit North knocking off Blue Valley, 58-51.
The win for the Broncos snapped a three-game losing streak as Lee’s Summit North entered Saturday’s game having lost four of five games and they improved to 6-6 this season with its win over the Tigers.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at five takeaways from Saturday’s game.
DeVeney a solid playmaker for Tigers
DeVeney had a quiet scoring night, picking up his first point with 4:15 remaining in the game on a drive to the bucket, but he is emerging as a terrific playmaker this season for Blue Valley. A left-hander, DeVaney is a crafty ball handler, can get to the basket a little and has a solid outside shooting touch. But his best attribute is his passing and playmaking abilities.
Farr vs. Tschirhart
Two of the Kansas City area’s better big men squared off on Saturday as Lee’s Summit North 6’7 2018 forward Elijah Farr went for 23 points while Blue Valley 6’8 2019 big man Siler Tschirhart went for 17 points, including a big third quarter that saw him score 11 points. The two spent much of the game guarding each other, making for a terrific individual battle. Also a standout on the football field, there were times in the game Farr overpowered Tschirhart around the basket and scored easy buckets. Farr also showed off a nice outside shooting touch and the ability to face up a little. Tschirhart is an old-school post player who does his best work on the low block. He has terrific hands, an emerging batch of post moves and a tough, physical player.
Turnovers cost Blue Valley
Saturday’s contest was a back-and-forth affair throughout, but key fourth quarter turnovers really hurt the Tigers and Lee’s Summit North guards turned up the ball pressure late. The Tigers had their moments throughout the contest, but the Broncos’ on-ball defense was tough late in the game, led by Logan Jenkins, Christian Carter and Javaunte Hawkins. Jenkins came up with consecutive steals and cruised in for easy buckets while Carter and Hawkins harassed the Blue Valley guards and make it tough for them to find open seams in the defense. Blue Valley is still a work in progress, but they hung tough with a good LSN team for three quarters.
Hawkins continues to impress
Javaunte Hawkins is emerging this season as one of the Kansas City area’s premier guards, At 5’10 2019 scoring point guard, Hawkins brings speed, quickness and the ability to score at all three levels. He has the ability to get to the basket and can also shoot from the outside as well. On Saturday, Hawkins also impressed with his pressure defense as LSN turned up the heat late in the game.
