Palmetto State : State Coverage
Prep Hoops takes a look around the Palmetto State coverage this week from tourney games.
Hartsville #3 seeded defeated the top seeded North Augusta Yellow Jackets in the Pepsi Carolina Classic held at West Florence HS. The Red Foxes won 80-75 in overtime. Trae Hannibal voted MVP scored 20 points in the win. Kyron Gray (2018) led the way with 26 points and fellow senior Jontavious Blakney added 12 points.
North Augusta was led in scoring by Bryson Mozone (2018) with 23 points, Omarion Byrd (2020) 15 points and freshman RJ Felton with 14 points.
The Aiken Fighting Green Hornets won the Bennie Bennett Holiday Classic by defeating the host Newberry 66-61. Calvin Mathis led 4 players in double digits with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Jordan Lytes added 12 points, Harrison Moss 11 points and George Williams 10 points.
The Williston-Elko Blue Devils captured the Hawk Invitational after defeating Ridge Spring-Monetta 63-54. The Blue Devils move to 7-2 on the season. Desmond Murray (2019) led the Blue Devils wih 18 points and 7 rebounds. Austin Smith chipped in 17 points while Demarkiis Doe added with 15 points.
Murray played AAU with Aiken Select this past summer and was playing alot of point guard today for the Blue Devils directing the offense and bringing the ball up the floor. Murray scored 19 points in the tourney opener s Wagoner Salley and 19 points again vs Barnwell. The Blue Devils defeated the War Horses 54-44.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt Red Raiders went 2-1 at the Hawk Invitational. The Red Raiders defeated Blackville-Hilda and Denmark-Olar. Quincy Irons (2018) made the All-Tourney team for the Red Raiders. Irons 6’2 guard will need to entertain junior college options according to Head Coach Jonathan Goodman.
Irons scored 10 points vs Blackville-Hilda and 24 points vs Denmark-Olar. Freshman Justin Baxter made a strong impression for the Red Reiders. Baxter 6’5 athletic forward hit the glass on both ends of the floor. Baxter scored 13 points vs Denmark-Olar.
