The annual Chance Harman Memorial Classic took place in Floyd County this past weekend, which is on one of my personal favorite events of the year. The two day classic takes place about 30 minutes from Blacksburg, and always features a mix of talented local teams from the western part of the state as well as some big time out of area programs, giving me a great chance to see and evaluate talent from numerous levels in one event.

The event is named after Chance Harman, Floyd County Head Coach Brian Harman's son who passed away from a rare form of cancer in the early 2000s. The event features raffles, silent auctions and more, and all profits go toward childhood cancer research.

Here's a look at part four of the standouts from VA teams in attendance.

While Northside lost a tough one to Glass, Hardy showed why he was such a great leader as he let the game come to him and didn't force things with Glass focusing on him and double teaming him for much of the game. The reigning State Player of the Year showed his great feel, making fantastic reads and setting his teammates up to succeed and showing a lot of trust in them, which was key throughout the game. When it got down to the nitty gritty, he found ways to get open and score it efficiently, and he just knows how to play the game the right way to put his team in chances to succeed.

[player_tooltip player_id='1767531' first='Mykell' last='Harvey'] | 6'2” WG | Northside '25

Harvey is another All State returner for this Northside team who has been on fire all season, and he didn't let up at all at Chance Harman showing his ability to score the ball in a number of different ways. A natural athlete who is committed to play division one football, he showed his explosiveness getting to the rim and playing above the rim while also using that athleticism to make plays defensively. He's become a knock down shooter from deep and made shots from all over, while also showing his ability to make plays for himself and others off the bounce.

Brayden Rayland | 6'6” PF | Northside '28

While Northside will be losing the two seniors that led them to back-to-back state titles next year, they have a really impressive piece to build on in Rayland, who is one of the best freshmen I've seen in Roanoke in the last few years. At 6'6” and already built like a grown man, Rayland dominated in the paint using his strength to clear out space to score it and rebound, while also showing good feet to move and defend in the paint. He has a mix of strength and soft touch to go along with his sweet feet, and he's only going to get better as he grows into his body and improves.

[player_tooltip player_id='1767543' first='Gavin' last='Herrington'] | 6'0” PG | Floyd County '25

Herrington has been running the show for the Buffaloes since he was a freshman, and he's improved so much over that time and is now a big reason they are looking at a deep March run. The 6'0” lead guard is dynamic off the bounce with his quick first step and ability to shake defenders, and when he got in the lane he made great reads setting up teammates all night long. He made shots at an efficient level and was the catalyst for their press providing great pressure and flying around defensively.

[player_tooltip player_id='2761878' first='Micah' last='Underwood'] | 6'4” WF | Floyd County '25

Underwood is going to be their x-factor this year and is one of their most important pieces, as he provides size for them in the paint as well as the athleticism and versatility to create mismatches. At 6'4” he runs the floor hard and has length to finish at the rim, and he uses that length to get deflections and challenge shots as well. He showed range out to the three-point line and the ability to handle the ball in transition as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2353675' first='Noah' last='Farley'] | 6'0” WG | Floyd County '27

Farley is Floyd's leading scorer as the 6'0” two guard thrives in their uptempo, 3 point happy style which fits his style of play to an absolute “t.” He came out on fire in their blowout win against Franklin, knocking down five three-pointers and scoring 19 points in just the first quarter! He showed extreme confidence in his shot letting it go from well beyond the arc and in transition, he made plays in their press and showed he can create his own shot as well.
